The initial announcement of Nintendo’s latest Zelda game was met with a lukewarm response. As one of the few games which support Wii Motion Plus, Skyward Sword has been criticised by fans for being far too generic especially since Nintendo themselves admitted that the current Zelda formula has become stale. Miyomoto’s botched stage demo at E3 (see video below) didn’t matters either, watching the mastermind who created the Zelda franchise struggle to play the latest instalment of the series was horrifying! I had the opportunity to briefly go hands of with Skyward Sword myself a few weeks ago but I walked away even less excited about the game. The controls were wildly inaccurate, the graphics were terrible (although this could be due to the booth set-up) but more importantly I just wasn’t having any fun. With the game still several months off I’m confident that the final product will be great. I’m particularly fond of the new, agile Link who moves as swiftly as a hero should. The paint work aesthetic is also a good look for this game but at the moment it seems to be under-utilized. A Zelda game with Okami style visuals would be perfect as realism isn’t the Wii’s strong suit. Here’s to hoping that it all comes together at the end…
