DC Universe Goes Free To Play Next Month

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it’s DC comics MMO will be switching to a free-to-play model from October. The switch will go into affect for both PC and PS3 gamers, which is pretty welcoming considering the expensive rate of subscription currently. Producer Lorin Jameson went out of his way to make clear that this switch isn’t due to any kind of decrease in subscribers. He mentioned that free-to-play was their preferred method from the start but due to the hight cost of developing the game they had to implement the subscription to recoup.

“This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one.”

Free players will get full access to the core game, whilst players who have been paying for premium content already will have extra perks such as more character slots and bigger cash/inventory limits. Legendary players will get all the features and benefits from the two groups above, as well as all the DLC for no extra charge, more than 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots and being able to form leagues with no size restrictions. A legendary account will still cost you £15 a month.
