EA: “We Have A Gamer First Mentality” After Ending Online Passes

EA have announced that they will no longer put a barrier between gamers and their games and that they have a gamer first mentality after ending online passes on their games last month.

EA Sports EVP Andrew Wilson spoke to MCV last week and talked about the system and why they installed it in the first place.

“When we launched it, we did so because we are investing an exorbitant amount of money in online services and the provision of online services, and to be frank we still do,” he said.

“And we thought it made sense to get some compensation for the use of those services. However, what became apparent to us after running it for a while, was that the impact that was having to users having to enter codes before they could get into the game, was too great.

“We have a gamer-first mentality – we don’t always get credit for it but we do. We looked at it, and said: ‘we don’t want to put that barrier there for gamers to have to go through that process. We are going to take it away. We are going to get rid of it. We will go back to making great games and it will all work out.’”

This is great news, DRM has obviously been a very hot topic over the past few weeks and it is good to see that EA are not going to impose any more restrictions to their games. Seemingly the main reason behind it was because people couldn’t be bothered to type in their codes, thankfully this laziness has led to EA stopping the online pass and meaning the anyone can now play online (as long as you pay Sony or Microsoft).

Please let me know in the comments if you can ever forgive EA (probably not) for what they have done.
