Microsoft has announced that a HD version of Age of Empires II will be coming to Steam on April 9 and have released a trailer showing you what to expect, which is maybe the best news I have heard all year.
The updated version is being done by Hidden Path Entertainment as former developer Ensemble Studios have closed down since the original release, the game will feature the single-player campaigns from Age of Kings and the Conquerors expansion, the Steam version will also feature multiplayer as well.
The remastered version will display at 1080p and will have improved textures and ambient lighting effects, the game will also have Steamworks support which means the game will get achievements leaderboards, matchmaking and cloud support, it will also support Steam Workshop meaning that users can share created content.

I seriously could not be more hyped for this, it is one of my favorite games of all time and it is fantastic that is coming to Steam. Anything that gives me another excuse to play AoE II is a great thing.
