An In Depth Look at Hayao Miyazaki

Hello Gamers and Anime peeps,

Anime News Network has recently posted an article of an interview with, Hayao Miyazaki, famed creator of Studio Ghibli. This is not your ordinary interview with Miyazaki-sama, this interview was conducted last year in July of 2013 and recently transcribed on September 8th, 2014. Only with the approval of Studio Ghibli was this possible, the interview gives you a more in depth look at the creator/artist and his point of views with life, Japan and modern politics. In this interview, he describes his life during WWII, his father, his changing relationship with Japan, insights towards the Self-Defense Forces and postwar Japan politics and economy. He states these under the topics of:

  • I would have become a patriotic young man if I had been born just a bit earlier
  • My father produced parts for warplanes during the war
  • It was only in my 30’s when I took a second look at Japan
  • Since we have lied until now, we should continue lying
  • What is most important is how we change the structure of our economy
  • Do not do things that are in vogue

I am a huge fan of Studio Ghibli and its productions, as well as a fan of the man behind it all. This interview is long and extensive, and it’s interesting to hear his personal points on life, his experiences and what he thinks society should do and not take for granted. Because at one point in his life, he “came to truly hate Japan”, thinking, “I was born in a country that did stupid things”.

What do you think about Miyazaki-sama’s view? How has he influenced your life with his films? Let us know in the comments below!
