Starbreeze Studios Announces StarVR, a High-End VR Headset

VR technology is something that is being discussed frequently lately, and with hardware like Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus it’s no wonder why. Well now there’s a new player in the VR space, and it comes from the last company you’d expect. Starbreeze Studios are the team behind The Chronicles of Riddick and the Syndicate reboot (They also published Payday). Their VR headset is to be known as StarVR, and it’s aimed at high-end PC enthusiasts.

StarVR features a 210 degree field-of-view and a 5120×1440 resolution, which gives it the highest resolution and field-of-view of any of the VR headsets announced. The Oculus Rift boasts a 2160×1200 resolution, so the difference should be pretty noticeable. This may not give them an advantage however, as it is being reported that the headset has had issues with outputting at this resolution.

There’s a demo of The Walking Dead using the VR headset available at E3. It allows you to use a shotgun peripheral that works in unison with the headset, and it can even detect the placement of your hands on the gun.

Ultimately the StarVR seems very much like a work in progress, if the impressions so far are anything to go by, then there’s still much work to be done on it. It’s apparently too heavy for extended use, and suffers from pixelation effects. But once perfected the StarVR could be a major player in the VR field.

There is currently no release window or estimated price for the StarVR. We wish much success to the folks over at Starbreeze and we hope that we’ll see some cool VR stuff from them in the future.
