The Halloween season is upon us and that can only mean one thing: new scary movies! Here’s The Koalition’s run-down of this season’s Halloween movies hitting theaters.

Goosebumps

First on the list is Goosebumps, which reminds us that Jack Black still exist and R.L. Stine is bringing out our inner terrified child. Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series.

It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Zach’s friend Champ (Ryan Lee) to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

The Last Witch Hunter

Then there’s Vin Diesel going too fast, too furious in The Last Witch Hunter. In this modern world, many secrets are held, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live among us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world.

Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer, causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimensions

In the “I Will Never Die” franchise that is Paranormal Activity comes the sixth and final installment, The Ghost Dimension, which follows a new family, The Fleeges – father Ryan (Chris J. Murray), mother Emily (Brit Shaw) and their young daughter Leila (Ivy George) – who move into a house and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage. When they look through the camera’s lens, they begin to see the paranormal activity happening around them – including the re-emergence of young Kristi and Katie.

The 3D found footage supernatural horror film is directed by Gregory Plotkin in his directorial debut, and written by Jason Pagan, Andrew Stark, Adam Robitel, and Gavin Heffernan. Plotkin served as the editor for the past four Paranormal Activity films so you can expect the same tactics and jump scares that made the series so popular.

Crimson Peak

Depending on your love of tea and Guillermo Del Toro, there’s Crimson Peak which follows the aftermath of a family tragedy. An aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins, the movie is rich in cinematography, costume design and a feeling that something sinister is going in the house with people both living and dead. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Jim Beaver. Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

Opening on October 30th is Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse which is about three scouts and lifelong friends who join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they’ll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead.

The American horror comedy film is directed by Christopher B. Landon and co-written with Carrie Evans, Emi Mochizuki and Lona Williams. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan, Sarah Dumont, and David Koechner. The film’s make-up effects are being handled by Tony Gardner and his company, Alterian, Inc.
