I tried my best not to write this peice. But all of my efforts seem to be falling on deaf ears, so i’ll explain whats been going on and why I won’t be attending this year.

There was an altercation that almost happened at PAX East last year. Me being the kind of person I am I prevented this altercation from happening by suggesting people walk away from the situation. The result: Nothing happened. I also heard there was another altercation at PAX but I really don’t have much information on that, but its still relevant to my situation maybe.

I applied for a media badge to attend pax this year and was presented with this reply:

Hello Anthony,

Your name is on the banned list for media. There were complaints last year that you got into a physical confrontation on the show floor with an attendee, and would not discuss with an enforcer what caused the incident.  

Your application have been denied.

Complaints? This is all brand new to me. And I was never approached by any enforcer at pax, matter of fact I didn’t even realize they existed. So my reply:

There must be a big mistake. I was not involved with any confrontation last year. Is there anyway to speak with someone in charge with the show to resolve this? I’m think there must be a mistaken identity. Thanks in advance. 

No reply was given. So I emailed/tweeted the official pax questions address and cc’d the media team in hopes that would get them to reply:

I take these accusations very seriously and would like to speak to someone in charge at the show. I was never involved in a physical confrontation at pax east and any conference for that matter. There is a case of mistake identity or someone having me confused with someone else. I’m a HUGE fan of the PAX expo and would like to have my name off the media ban list so I can cover the show this year.

Hello Anthony,

I am the person in charge of media registration and take these accusations very seriously as well.  The enforcer who requested you be banned is one of our longest tenured and most trusted enforcers.  He said that he knows who you are and is sure that the person engaged in the fight was you.

You are not banned from the show entirely.  If you would like to cover this year you may still purchase a pass.

Ok. So this enforcer knows who I am? I strongly disagree with that because if he did than he would know he has the wrong person. Its very frustrating for someone to be so sure about something by taking someones word for it without any proof whatsoever. Theres clearly something wrong with this picture. Then to say I’m not banned entirely is even more weird. I mean, if i’m fighting and causing trouble, why am I allowed back? Everything just got weird for me. So a violent offender is allowed to be around masses of people again as long as they pay? So I urged them again to please review this false accusation:

I’m sure you trust you enforcer very much. But may I please speak to this enforcer? I still think this is a huge mistake, as this is simply not true. If this were true I would gladly take this decision, but its not. I have people who were present with me during Pax who can vouch for me, and im pretty sure if I were to reach out to some of the developers i met with they can as well. I’m trying not to make this personal, but it disheartening that I can be accused of fighting. This is untrue.

No reply was given again. So I decided to move up the ladder and try to reach someone at the company who helps to produce the expo. I got in contact with a VP at that company in hopes that he could help get me in touch with this “enforcer” or someone at the show so I can prove my case. I don’t want to reveal that conversation but it ended with him telling me basically there was nothing he could do to get me a pass. At this point its really not about the pass, its about me being accused of something I didn’t do, I no longer have interest in the show, my energy was on this enforcer and this accusation.

So there you go. Without any proof and based off somebody’s word I was allegedly fighting at Pax and banned from attending as media. Its clearly a case of mistaken identity, and I still stand by it. And i’m still eager to resolve this issue, even though I have a sour taste in my mouth about the way these certain people at pax handled it. I don’t mind buying a pass to show support, but because of this situation I don’t want to. Not sure if i’ll be back really, I was a big fan and even bragged about how it was better than E3.

Then we got the news from Microsoft that this was just a tech demo, showing what could be possible with Kinect. Peter confirmed Milo was in fact real, maybe the end goal was just too much handle or Microsoft didn’t feel it was worth the investment. If Milo couldn’t be successful as a whole at least Lionhead made some cool developments in the process of trying. Supposedly there is some cool “emotion” technology coming to Kinect games soon according to Wikipedia.

In the end, I think gamers forgetting about Milo was a blessing to Microsoft. That was a pretty high bar set by Peter and we have yet to see anything close to it. All those conversations about how real GTA and fighting games would be with Kinect has sadly faded to black. It was cool to dream about it though.

Playd’s own ElectroJade gives gamers a easy way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Hey Playd fans and the like! Learn how to make your own gamer cookies – Zelda style! It’s quick, easy, and perfect for your Valentine! Here’s the detailed recipe below:

1 cup all purpose flour

1/3 teaspoon baking soda

1/3 cup butter, softened

1/3 cup granulated white sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a bowl, mix the flour and baking soda together. Place this aside.

In another bowl, whisk together the butter and the sugar until it’s mixed well. Add the egg and the vanilla extract too. Separate this mixture into two bowls to add in the separate food coloring (Yellow food-coloring for the Triforces, and Pink food-coloring for the Hearts).

Once coloured, add a ½ cup of the flour mixture to each bowl. Beat until you have perfect dough.

Wrap the pieces of dough in plastic or wax wrap, and keep them in the freezer for fifteen minutes. Once out of the freezer, they should be firm to roll out.

At this time, it’s smart to preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Make sure you place the rack in the center of the oven as well.

Lightly flour your surface, and roll out the pieces of dough you’ve created. It’s better to roll our your dough to ½ cm for your cookies. The dough shouldn’t be too thick, or else your triforces might puff up and look like balloons. Balloons, people!

To cut out the cookies shapes, you can use a spatula and a spoon. For the triforces, cut out a triangle with your spatula. Use the spatula to cut three triangles within the cookie you’ve just cut out. You should have your three triangles to make a triforce. Piece them together on a greased baking sheet. For the hearts, use a spoon to create cookie curves and points.

You can even add some sparkling sugar on your cookies for an added bonus.

Once you’ve cut your cookies and placed them on your greased baking sheet, bake your cookies for seven to eight minutes.

Take them out, and place them on a plate to cool off. Once cool, enjoy the deliciousness and savor each bite!

You can add more to your treats by placing them in a jar (any jar, really), or siding them with a glass of lon lon milk. It’s hilarious, cute and gamer-friendly!

Anthony Frasier is one of those people who knows what he wants, and has enough passion to find it. He’s one of those people who have the knowledge and the eye to pick up on things that others may not see. Many a time he has pointed out a specific thing to me, such as what the future of a gaming company may bring; and many times he is correct. He possesses the foresight to see what the future may bring, and thus help himself and others around him build towards being a part of it.

Over the course of 2011 our very own Koalition co-founder Anthony Frasier has been working towards building and releasing his video game related mobile app Playd. He spent the whole summer in the Tech Capitol of America Sillicon Valley, participating in the NewMe Accelerator. He has recently been featured on CNN‘s Black In America, TechCrunch, and a number of other popular publications.

Today I had the great pleasure to interview our resident entrepreneur regarding The Koalition, the NewMe Accelerator and of course his mobile app Playd.

Many of the Koalition readers recognize you as one of the founders of the site. Can you remind us how this all came together, and why?

The Koalition came together when me and a few guys including you Gary, got sick of playing the sidelines for gaming news. We felt we had a perspective, and something to say that the world should hear. So instead of spending our time posting things from their sites, we kind of all decided we could do this on our own. The Koalition was born.

Would you say The Koalition was fundamental in learning how to build a brand, or did you get that knowledge elsewhere?

Yes and no. The Koalition was very fundamental in learning how to manage a brand and a product. It has taught me lessons and gave me experience that I can surely say I wouldn’t be here without. But going outside of my own experience and learning from others was just as vital. So reading a ton of books and blogs from key individuals was just as effective in my growth. My work with Bubbalon also taught me a lot about partnerships, and business development. I credit a lot of the things I learned in that time to Todd Hamilton who was sort of a mentor at the time.

How much did running The Koalition help you to get where you are now?

The Koalition played a huge part. I always wanted to be apart of the game industry in some fashion. But when we started The Koalition it exposed me to the business side, and sure some things are not so fun about the gaming industry, but for the most part people enjoy everything about it. The Koalition taught me you can make a business out of your passion.

So tell us how the idea for Playd first came about.

Well the idea first came about when I was 8 years old. I played my uncle’s brand new Nintendo. Me and my brother had to sneak and play it because my uncle was afraid we would break it. I got so excited about playing Tecmo bowl that I went outside and told everyone I knew about my experience. Eventually my uncle found out and I got in trouble. But what if it was somehow the other way around? What if instead of getting in trouble for my big mouth about gaming I could get rewarded? So the concept has always lived inside of me.

I got together with Alex Galkin who just got off his stint with Bubbalon and we kind of put it all in app form. It wasn’t until Alex did a little mock up inside Photoshop when I felt like this could actually be something real.

How did you end up on the NewMe Accelerator?

I saw Wayne Sutton tweeting about it on Twitter right around the time we started Playd. I ignored it a few times, but something told me to just do it eventually. I sent my pitch in right before the deadline and got through.

How much did you learn over the course of the summer at NewMe?

I learned a ton. It’s one thing to read books, read blogs, watch videos of individuals working on start-ups and talking about their success. It’s a whole different story when you’re living right underneath all of that magic. You could be in Palo Alto next to a multi millionaire and wouldn’t even know it. Everybody is real laid back and ambitious.

It’s so much that learned that it’s almost impossible to answer this question with a simple statement. I think my best bet is to help contribute that knowledge over time in blogs, and meet-ups and while also continuing to learn myself. I used to always hear it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. My new saying is that its whats you know and who you know.

Were the cameras nerve racking for you?

At first it was a little weird. Then I got used to it over time. My problem was staring at the camera and laughing. It was just funny to me sometimes how they really try to capture conversations you may be having with someone.

For some, building an app and presenting it on the Appstore seems like an easy feat, can you tell us how much work actually goes into building an app like Playd?

It could be easy, every situation is different. Do you know how to code? Is the problem you’re solving big? Are you more business focused? My road to Playd was a mix of everything. I knew how to code but very basic so having people on my team who knew how to do a better job was essential. I knew how to design, but mobile UI isn’t the same as making banner so Alex played a huge part in that role. Figure out your weaknesses and fill those gaps in.

How did it finally feel to launch the app officially after all that preparation?

It felt great, but always look at the glass half full. I felt like it was only the beginning, and all the hard work starts now.

What analogy would you give to those critics who don’t understand that an app like Playd is never really finished?

Hmm thats a good question. I don’t really have analogy. I would say that people shouldn’t think we are ever finished iterating the product. We can make changes and enhance different features when we see fit. We so far have received some great feedback. More positive than negative. But the negative feedback I try to really dig in and see what about my product I can do to make it better for them. I take a very different approach than most. Some critics are really surprised they get an email from me or message via Facebook. We have a discussion about how to make things better and they’re whole opinion is changed about Playd. My goal isn’t to change opinions though, its to get to the bone of the problem. so that I can make it better for others who may feel the same.

What do you see for the future of Playd?

I see Playd disrupting the way gaming brands engage with their audience. People are only seeing the beginning of what we can do with our platform. We are working on some pretty exciting partnerships. Stay tuned.

Where do you see the gaming industry in five years?

I see the game industry having continued growth. Its a great time to be a gamer, competition is at an all time high. Mobile, console, PC are all competing for our attention. Its forcing platforms and software to take more creative approaches. the gamers benefit n the end.

I know you to be a real deep thinker, are there any other ideas in your head that you want to act on anytime soon?

I have a real passion for music and film. I have some ideas that are floating around and even some that are fully written and specified on paper. I have a new lab I formed with partners George Youmans and Mack Bonthera called Radian where we will explore some of these ideas. Obviously that’s on the back burner for me at the moment because 95 percent of my time is on Playd.

Speaking with OPM he said the following regarding his involvement with the project.

“This time I’ve been really hands-off, letting it go on its own with the new team,”

“It’s not like I’m giving up complete control. It’s that point in the beginning – the core concept, finding that seed. So the concept came from the staff – they got the idea to use Raiden as the main character and to make it into an action game. Even the story: I try not to read it, because if I do then I’ll want to say something and get sucked back in again.”

Hardcore Metal Gear fans should feel safe that the game will stick with the core values, as Kojima certainly keeps a watchful eye for anything that goes against what the game has come to represent.

“Very early on I set boundaries and I gave some feedback. If there’s something I feel crosses a line and goes against everything Metal Gear is, then I’ll say something. But as much as possible I try to preserve the boundary.”

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is due for release in 2012 for PS3, 360 and PC. A re-reveal is on the cards at the VGAs in two weeks.

The following ruleset was created by the BBR Ruleset Committee, which is made up by active, respected Tournament Organizers from around the United States. This will be considered the standard, universal ruleset for Brawl tournaments across the US. Any tournaments that do not follow this ruleset will not be eligible for stickies on SWF or featured coverage on AllisBrawl.

Changes to this ruleset can be made at any time and without warning, for which we will update the version based on the significance of the change. The Ruleset Committee will pay close attention to tournament trends, and if a persistent problem presents itself, the Ruleset Committee will address the issue and adapt the ruleset as necessary. If you are interested in being admitted to the BBR-RC, send your tournament resume to AlphaZealot – you must however, have run 1 tournament with the Unity Ruleset in order to be eligible for admission.

General Gameplay Rules

All infinites and chain grabs are legal.

Meta Knight’s Infinite Cape Glitch and Extended Cape Glitch are banned.
There is a Ledge Grab Limit of 35 for Meta Knight and 50 for all other characters. If a game goes to time and one player goes over the Ledge Grab Limit for their character, they will automatically lose the game. If both players exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then this rule is ignored.
The act of stalling is banned: stalling is intentionally making the game unplayable: Such as becoming invisible, continuing infinites, chain grabs, or uninterruptible moves past 300%, and reaching a position that your opponent can never reach you.

Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.

If the Ledge Grab Limit does not declare one player the winner, the winner will be declared by what the game says in all situations, except for when players are presented with sudden death:
In the event of a match going to time, the winner will be determined by who has less percent (stock difference still takes priority but will be shown in the results screen).
If the match ends with both play
ers dying at the same time (either coincidentally or via suicide move) or if time ran out with both players at equal percent, a one stock three minute rematch will be played on the same stage. For a tie-breaker match, a Ledge Grab Limit of 13 is used for Meta Knight, and 18 for all other characters.

Modified Rules for Doubles

Life stealing is allowed.

In the event of a game reaching the time limit, if a single player on a team exceeds their Ledge Grab Limit, that team loses. If one or more players on both teams exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then the Ledge Grab Limit rule is ignored.

In the event of a game going to time and the Ledge Grab Limit can not determine a winner and both teams have an equal amount of combined stocks, then whichever team has a lower combined percent is declared the winner.

If a player is using the character Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, or Sonic, either team may request that team colors be changed to make it easier to tell the difference between team players.

Set Procedure
Player Priority is determined if it can not be agreed on. (See below for details)
Each Team selects one controller port to use for each Player.

Each Team selects one character for each Player. A double blind pick may be called by any player.

The first game is played on a Stage selected from the Starter Stage List either by mutual consent or through the Stage Striking Method. The order of stage striking will be 2-3-1 (Team 1 strikes two stages, followed by Team 2 striking three stages, with Team 1 then striking one of the two remaining stages).

The first match is played.
The team that lost the previous match may opt to re-pick controller ports (with themselves picking first).

The Team that won the previous match may announce one “Stage Ban” if they have not already done so in this set.

The Team that lost the previous match announces the stage for the next match from either the Starter or the Counterpick Stage List. Any Stage named as a “Stage Ban” by the either Team may not be selected. No Stage may be used by a Team that has already won on that Stage in this set.

The Team that won the previous match chooses one character for each Player.

The Team that lost the previous match chooses one character for each Player.

The next match is played.

Repeat steps 6-11 for all proceeding matches.
Determining Player Priority
If there is a dispute in controller port selection or initiating Stage Strike use the following method:

Teams agree to Rock-Paper-Scissors, otherwise it is determined with a coin-flip. The winning Team shall either elect to have first choice in port selection or first choice in Stage Strike. Whichever Team does not receive first choice in Port Selection will be compensated with first choice in Stage Striking.

Note: In Doubles, port selection is ordered 1-2-2-1 fashion (with Team-1 having first choice in controller slot select, Team-2 having both second and third choice, and the final slot going to Team-1).

BYOC (Bring your own controller): Players are expected to bring their own controller and be prepared for every tournament set.
Pause can be requested off and that request cannot be denied. If one pauses mid-match, the person who initiated the pause loses their current stock. If the pause causes the opponent to lose their stock (Such as interfering with recovery), the person who initiated the pause loses two stocks.

Players who use the Wii Remote must take the batteries out of the Wii Remote when not playing. If the Wii Remote is still synced up to a Wii with the batteries in, you could unintentionally disrupt a match. If problems persist, a DQ may happen.

You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility (including battery issues with a Wii Remote), so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you’re using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. Both parties need to agree if a match is to be paused or restarted because of these problems.

Intentional forfeiting, match fixing, splitting, and any other forms of bracket manipulation are not allowed and punishable by the TO.
No substitutions are allowed for singles or doubles.

Coaching is allowed only between games, not during. Failure to adhere to this will lead to punishment at the TO’s discretion, which could include the removal from the venue.

DQ Rule: Arriving too late for a match will result in a DQ. Player(s) will have 5 minutes to show up before a loss of the first match. 5 more minutes results in a loss of the set. For doubles, both players on a team need to be present in order to play.

The tournament organizer has the right to save/record any tournament match if possible and has the right to upload said match.
Regarding textures and other game hacks:

Players may request that any texture, stage, or other hacks be disabled during a tournament set. If this is unable to be done, they may switch to a different setup if available.

The BBR-RC recommends players do not use intrusive texture and stage hacks.

Players are not allowed to use any game altering hacks, such as no-tripping or model hacks. If someone is caught setting up a system they brought with such hacks enabled can face punishment at the TO’s discretion.

Disrupting your opponent physically or intending to disrupt their play (through something such as screaming in a player’s ear) will result in a warning. Repeated action will result in disqualification from the tournament and possibly ejection from the venue. Observers who physically disrupt players are to be dealt with as the Tournament Organiser sees fit. Disqualification is recommended if possible, and ejection from the venue is also a punishment.

•These rules are subject to change leading up to the event date. The Tournament Organizer reserves the right to remove you from the venue at his discretion for any reason.

•The Tournament Organizer and his assistents, and any persons helping run the event may not be held liable for any lost, stolen, or damaged goods during this event. Nor will the Tournament Organizer, the venue, its owners, affiliates, employees, members, sponsors, or volunteers be held liable or responsible for any injury or harm that may befall a person during the course of this event. By entering the venue during the posted date you are displaying your agreement with this policy.

I also will be featured in the upcoming CNN documentary Black In America 4. CNN followed the housemates of NewME for the summer, capturing the hard times and the good times. Not really sure how the end product will look, but long as I look cool, I’m not sweating it. I think CNN covering NewMe was important because people need to see that we exist. I think young people need to see new examples of struggle and success. No offense to the rappers who are cool with a few tech startups, but your not really the shiny example.

Also Soledad O’Brien is pretty cool in person. I’m normally the laid back cool guy in the room. And most people thought I was being that way when Soledad would sit and talk with me. But truth is her eyes had me stuck on words, I wasn’t being cool, she actually made me nervous. Lets keep that between me and you.

Below are a few screenshots, and more importantly the latest features from Max Payne 3. You will not be disappointed. Its as if they are taking taking all the good elements from their recent games and adding a little bit more spice to the mix. Tell me what you think of them below.

- The combination of Natural Motion’s Euphoria character behavior system and Bullet Time adds a new level to Max’s classic shoot dodge moves. Shoot-dodge is not a canned animation, but a natural interaction with the environment, as Max will reach out to the floor as he dives, and naturally respond to objects in his way if you attempt to dive into a wall or obstacle

- This marriage of slow-motion gunplay and Euphoria physics amplifies the cinematic action of Max Payne 3 significantly, and enemies will also respond realistically to each bullet fired.

- Max Payne 3 extends the concept of Bullet-Time to now include game areas of the game that will trigger set pieces involving Bullet-Time. These provide epic moments of action that allow Max to take out enemies in a new interpretation of Max Payne’s signature style.

- Bullet-Cams return: in keeping with the stylish gunplay for which Max is known, Bullet-Cams deliver players a reward for downing enemies with a satisfying final kill

- Max Payne 3 takes the graphic novel panels of the earlier games and evolves them by utilizing in-game assets to create a motion comic-style approach.

- James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, is back. Not only as the voice of max, but Max’s appearance, face and many of his movements in Max Payne 3 are all captured directly from James himself.

- Max Payne 3 features an integrated cover system. Cover adds an extra strategic element to the classic shoot-dodge/bullet-time/ run-and-gun mechanics of Max Payne, providing players with new options in any given situation

- Tremendous detail has been paid to every facet of Max Payne 3: Bullets destroy nearly everything in the environment, sweat will appear on Max’s face and shirt as the heat of battle wears on, and blood soaks the clothing of his enemies. You’ll also notice the minute details of the weapons themselves: hammers cock back, slides move, shells expel from the chamber and literally hundreds more.

- Partners and sidekicks will play a large role in Max Payne 3. Hundreds of hours of custom motion-capture were done for individual characters, making traditional in-game encounters completely unique, such as enemies sweeping a room or simply the way Max’s partners will behave as they move through the game.
