Throwback Thursday: Big Pun – Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy)

Big Pun is this week’s selection for Throwback Thursday with his 1998 track titled “Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy)”.

“Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy)” is from Big Pun’s debut album titled “Capital Punishment” which was released 15 years ago, this month. April is a special month when it relates to Big Pun – all 3 of his albums were released in April of each year (1998, 2000 & 2001)

Big Pun is accompanied on “Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy)” with fellow New York MC’s Prodigy from Mobb Deep and Inspectah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan. Fellow Clan member RZA took the production responsibilities for this banger with legendary X-Ecutioner, DJ Roc Raida taking credits for the scratches.

The topic for “Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy)” is based on rappers who try to copy and bite styles which have brought success to the three artists featured on this song.

Rakim is sampled for the hook and the song also contains a sample from Tony Montana and Alejandro Sosa in the movie “Scarface”.

Big Pun (who is infamous for not only his quality lyricism and fast delivery, but also his size) died in the year 2000 after suffering a heart attack. He weighed almost 700lbs at the time of his death. His music continued after his passing with two posthumous albums released in 2000 and 2001.

“Capital Punishment” was the album which wrote Big Pun into the Hip-Hop history books as the first Latino rapper to have a platinum album. It was very well received by critics and fans a-like and is still available on Amazon.
