It was a well written article. It reminds me of the flak GTA:SA was getting with a black lead character over on the gamefaqs forums. I posted, "Being black and had to play the Mario's, the Link's, Solid Snakes & The Sam Fisher's for the last 20 years I have no sympathy for any caucasian that has to play CJ. A black lead in a video game that is based in the gang wars of South Central, LA." Also I like how the one guy (who's hispanic) pointed out how certain characters that are suppose to be hispanic, dont reflect his culture. I feel the same way when I see a black character with Blonde / white hair and blue eyes.

wow - this like the underground railroad of articles. I too have come by way of the Kotaku article - lol. Man, I wasn't even aware this site existed, but am glad I found it. I swear some of the most bigoted people are on that site. An yeah - I'm right along-side your man Gizmo too. I be doing the same damn thing too. I only check it when I'm at work- I work 3rd shift (boo). I wonder how may other accolodes this site will receive because of that article alone?

Great article, very nice read. I'll just copy my post from Kotaku, but I'm definitely glad it brought me to this site. I'll now bookmark here and put it in my daily rounds!
--

"As a half-black half-white individual, it was a curiously joyous time when I saw Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2 was half-black also. It rocked, I never even imagined I'd see the day when that would happen and believe it, she's a beloved character now.

I would love to see more games with black protagonists. If you were to meet me, you'd instantly think I was a white kid, but I personally can't associate with either race. I'm stuck in the middle and loving it- best of both worlds to be honest.

I really like how Valve handles ethnic diversity throughout their games. And they are all so quality!"

I totally agree with what someone said in the article. It's not necessarily the face you identify with, but the protagonist's motives and personality. In that sense, completely colorblinds us. Race will always be a present topic of course. I do hope we'll see more ethnically diverse characters and heroes (even villains) that don't get cornered into a mess of overly stereotypical behaviors.

In reply to minxotic,

I regularly visit Kotaku, in fact- I am here because of them. I tend to agree with you in respects, but once you seperate the wheat from the chaff, you will see a lot of the regular "Kotakuites" are actually pretty cool. I visit there 5-6 times a day, probably more. I basically just refresh every so often. I think I even commented on your avatar from Persona! Totally rocks. :D

Being a female, african-american gamer, I fully appreciate and cosign the opinions posted in that article.
I'm an Irish gamer and I find myself wondering is this debate about feeling a cultural disconnect from the characters that we play or feeling that in the game world people like me simply don't exist?

I ask the question as when I play games I rarely see characters who look or sound like me from a cultural point of view. They're white but their culture is either overwhelmingly American (FPS games, sci-fi) or cod English (RPGs). I don't identify with the people in these games but I'm used to not really identifying with characters in other media either as typically again they are either American or British.

I did however enjoy the ability to choose between a wide range of nationalities in Far Cry 2. I thought the characterisations were well done if a little inconsequential in the actual game (fair play for actually getting an actor in who could do a Derry accent however).
