In my opinion, it still holds the title of best western RPG, for its sheer game mechanics. Sure Oblivion is a graphical improvement to fit the new gen, but most of the fans who played both games claim that III wins by far. Yeah, it does stand out even years later for its digital beauty, yes it offers an incredible depth of customization, and yea, the quests were awesome, but there's a few other western rpg's that could vie for this spot with similar advantages. Fallout 3 looked incredible, and its exploration was a little more varied and maybe better. The Mass Effect series (especially number 2) look beautiful, have an incredible storyline and good quests, and I would argue one of the most well crafted game universes ever made. As for Dragon Age Origins, I'm preparing to play it, and I'm pretty excited at the prospect of forging a character with their own back-story and personality and making the character "my own." Shepard in ME is similar, but in DA:O it really is Your character.

The point of this? Idk, lol. I just felt like giving credit where credit is due to the other western RPG's. Oblivions great, and may be an inspiration to all that came after, but I don't think it's got a clear lead on any of the others. Just my thoughts. Good article btw =)
