In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2011/capcom-announces-dragons-dogma-the-japanese-dragon-age#comment-35842">Asad Quadri</a>.

Looks like Japanese devs are inspired by Western RPG's. They are trying to step it up a notch now. I love me a good JRPG here n there (like Star Ocean) but the fact is that Western devs have taken the genre over. Hard for Japs to compete with the likes of Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout....I could go on.

To me it looks like Japan's answer to The Witcher, which is a very good thing. Looks like Japanese developers has stepped away from making stereotypical JRPGs (angsty young anime people who are lead by a manically depressed anime individual who can't stop bitching about how everything is his/her fault complete with melodrama and horrifically bad gameplay mechanics showing that gameplay and story are kept on the opposite sides of the fence because apparently Japanese developers thought that players would prefer an endless reel of melodramatic cutscenes "blah blah blah everything's my fault" "blah blah blah save the world" "blah blah blah believe in myself" "blah blah blah my friends" blah blah blah love interest" blah blah blah this dialogue is really bad" to actual gameplay) and are opting for more a western style approach with gameplay that actually looks really good.

I'll be watching out for this one.
