You can disagree all you want on the definition of it being played out, but 'visceral 30FPS' isn't 30FPS. It's "visceral" (adj.): Relating to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect. Playing games like Skyrim on the PS3 or Crysis 2 on either console, surely you know this generation has been tapped out when a game is playing 20-25FPS instead of the minimal 29FPS standard. It's an immersion breaker. Any spilt-screen game from this gen will give you that; only now we've reached the point where the split-screen performance is now full screen. Play Resistance Fall of Man, and then play Resistance 2. Play CoD:4 then play CoD: Black Ops. Play Uncharted 2 or 3 and then watch the Last of Us. Compare Battlefield 3 performance on a console to a PC. We are steadily behind. Why do you think people aren't into games right now? Because they just can't keep up with us.

In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2012/e3-2012-microsoft-conference-recap-review#comment-120266">JakeyBee</a>.

I really do agree with a lot of the points you make here, I wasn't stating that their strategy with the 360 as a gaming console was the right move, but rather that as a company. They're just shifting their focus to be the broad entertainment hub of households, as opposed to the gaming console with the most robust array of games - and that is working for them financially, it just sucks from the point of view of a gamer.

You're probably right as far as hardware constraints are concerned when it comes down to specifics, but I don't really agree that this console generation is totally played out. I think there is a lot more room for innovation, but time will tell on that note.

"As a company, Microsoft is probably making the right move." The only word that makes sense in that entire statement is the word "probably." Microsoft's play-it-safe approach will only hurt it's place in the market--Sony's was so close to being the same. The reason this industry is hurting is because the hardware is old, and innovation is running sparse because of it. Yes, 343i, Quantic Dream and Naughty Dog have made some amazing graphics happen on the consoles, but we all know the games are going to run at 25FPS--we're simply wasting this gen. FarCry 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter were shown on the new 600 series Nvidia cards. Watch Dogs wasn't even played on a 360--though they were all played with a 360 controller. You could tell by Assassin's Creed 3 demo and FarCry 3's PS3 4-player co-op demo that games today don't compare to the modern graphics the industry is advertising to us, because the consoles we're playing on are simply outdated. The longer we wait, the less saturated the market will become.

Technology needs to innovate if it doesn't want to deteriorate. When an corporation begins to milk it's consumer base, the consumers realize the tech is outdated and shift to other kinds of media. The industry is dying for innovation, and the PS3, 360, and the new Wii U are only holding it back from what it should be.
