DNF and Aliens should have been higher on this list. The wheels completely come off the wagon though when your argument suggests that GTA IV, a game that sold massive quantities and got great reviews was the number one flop of a generation. The word “flop” doesn’t apply to GTA IV, it was a success commercially and critically, if you or others don’t like it that would be understandable but by all accounts it was a successful game and to have it listed here just makes your whole list seem silly. On a list of “most over-rated” it might make sense, but as a “flop”, sorry your argument is invalid.

DNF is by far the biggest flop/disappointment in all of my gaming experience. I’ve played through some fairly crappy games in my days, but I finished them all. This is one that I simply shut down, mid-game and traded it in. Complete rubbish.

The reason it’s # 1 is because of the expectations it had…and how it missed them…If you have high expectations you better nail it…same deal with GOW…A slight miss is a huge let down

I did agree IV was overrated. The driving was poor, graphics were blurry and the gameplay was dull. Not to mention the major yawnfest of a story.

I agree that GTA IV is overrated but I wouldn’t call it a flop. It’s far from the top 20 games of the generation, I agree. But it’s also a matter of perspective. I agree the single-player is tedious, but the online play is why it succeed. Most online action games on consoles were just standard deathmatch FPS games; GTA IV changed that and made one of the first online open-world action game for consoles.

In reply to JT Ripton. On a serious note, I liked your article, and I agree with many of your choices. I'm also one of the 30% who hasn't completed GTA 4--that applies to all GTA games for me. Also, I forgot sixaxis existed until you brought up Lair.

Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite games, and won several GOTY awards…Bio Shock infinite won’t win but is a contender for GOTY…All the Mario games are great (except Sunshine)…why did I reply to this one…

I explained why those games are on there, GOW:A didn’t live up to what the other console GOW’s were…The anticipation for most of those games you you listed weren’t that great, they aren’t really big franchises (other than gears of wars, which I haven’t played) and the ratings for it are in the 90’s average

Never owned a Xbox….I’ve been a PS fanboy since 95…The fact that there is a lot of PS Exclusives on the list sucks, I dont like it one bit…Xbox games don’t take risks, a bad but safe thing to do

RE6 Was a huge disappointment…Why do you think Capcom is reversing course, and it sold so poorly, and it’s ratings were so poor? I explained by that R&C was a flop, had crappy ratings as well, didn’t live up to what a R&C game usually is…Lair was a undeniable flop, hardly playable, what world are you living in?…And I am a fan of video games, Good Video games that live up to or surpass expectations…Not ones that fall below them

This is the kind of journalism that is damaging to the gaming industry. I thought David was the only one capable of such a horrendous title, but nope it’s somebody else. What would even possess one to write this article and then claim to be a fan of video games? And I haven’t even started on the fact that the choices are ALL wrong. Lair, Ratchet and Resident Evil are flops? What world is this? Come and write for my site so I can show you some discipline boy.

God of War: Ascension scored 81%, so it’s in the 80s not 70s and God of War: Ghost of Sparta also scored in the 80s so it’s not as much an anomaly of the series as you make it out to be.

You need to correct this fact:

That 360,000 unit sold figure you’re quoting is just an estimate for the games first month sales in the US, according to NPD it actually sold 633,000 units in the US first month which is amazing, especially for the genre, even if it’s still a lot less than God of War III at 1.1 million.

The game has already sold around 2 million units in 9 months, it’ll go on to be the 5th bestselling game in the genre of all time behind GoW3, GoW1, GoW2, GoW: CoO. It’s far ahead of the bestselling game from every other hack ‘n slash franchise ever, so how can it be considered a flop?

There’s so many flops to choose from, I don’t understand why God of War: Ascension or GTA IV is on the list? Ninja Gaiden 3? DmC? Gears of War: Judgment? Too Human? Come on there’s loads.
