I, as the biggest Sega fan of all time, do not think that Sonic needs to crumble away like an old cookie left on the bench. I have played many of the classic games, and they are masterpieces. Colors, Generations and, surprisingly enough, Heroes were quite enjoyable, not quite living up to the classics, but enjoyable. And Sonic Advance was quite nice too. Although I don't care what new sidekick monstrosities they think of, I feel that Sonic himself (and maybe Tails) needs to live on in the gaming industry.

Oh and i dont understand why people are playing 2d games. I stopped playing those all together when i first saw a 3d game. What gives? There just addicting u get nothing out of them. Oh and FPS's in general need to go. There all so formulaic. I feel like somebody glued a gun and a GOPRO to a piece of plywood, being wheeled around a target range. Games like Last of Us and GTA III and up are the best thing in story telling and gameplay.

Great article. You've definitely hit a nerve! Games like COD (and the endless iterations thereafter) will continue to exist until the cash cow runs out. Just like a lot of the other games on this list.

With Ghosts coming out, I'd love to see some real innovation!

CoD-- Black Ops 2 was good. Make CoD: Ghosts better than that, then call it a day

Mario/Sonic/Zelda-- You've BEEN ready for a finale for 3 generations! Just have the finale and end it already!!

God/Gears Of War-- finished story is finished.

Assassin's Creed-- I gave you the benefit of the doubt with AC: Revelations, but now you're pushing it. Let Desmond get his due and kick Juni's ass!

MoH/Metroid/ Tom Clancy games-- You've secured your place in Valhalla. You've earned your rest.

In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2013/five-game-franchises-that-need-to-die#comment-151125">S-Noir</a>.

Thanks for this great comment! One thing I want to clarify on is that I never said 2D platformers all together need to go, I loved the fast-paced and refreshing take that Ubisoft brought when they reinvented Rayman and I feel like the genre does still have some untapped potential, I just feel like Nintendo is seriously relying too heavily on Mario in that realm.

The 2D Mario games have felt the same for years now and I don't really see any indication of that changing. Sure, they sell and are still well made, but I don't see that as justification for milking something necessarily.

I understand the disapproval that particular selection is receiving though. Even if deep down I think it would be the right thing to do, I'd be just as sad as anyone if it happened.

Absolutely agree with Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. I think overall modern military FPS need to die off entirely.
But this is America so that will never happen.

Gears of War however, I don't think it 'needs' to die but it should definitely have taken a little slumber after the conclusion of the trilogy. I also agree on the thoughts of Cliffy B's departure from Epic, I drew similar feelings when Itagaki left Team Ninja. But I think Gears has enough in it to do at least one prequel, everybody get's one, don't they?

Sonic the Hedgehog... yes he does need to die if they keep using him in such painful ways. Though Sonic Generations was actually pretty fun and the useage of the character was actually, for the first time, respectful to Sonic's name. There's a small glimmer of hope if they continue to build off of that. I would say give him one more chance.

Assassin's Creed and God of War both are franchises that I feel need to take a really long break. How many more prequels does Kratos have in him? I feel at one point we're gonna be playing him when he was a Spartan general and it'll be some crazy real time strategy thing. Or hell, maybe God and Jesus are next? I do think his story has been told, as much as I love God of War, yes he needs to rest... but I'm such a glutton that I would welcome another entry. Assassin's Creed suffers the same issues. Althought Black Flag does look pretty cool. I just think they need to take more time and not just 1 release every year.

Pokemon will forever be the same game, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop that. I think I'm part of the problem, being a consumer of every entry from the regular Blue and Red. What can I say, they're just so addicting. A part of me wishes for a proper 3D title on consoles and a part of me wishes to play the same game forever. I will say I would rather play Pokemon than play Call of Duty though.

The last one, I'm sorry buddy, I have to completely disagree with you. 2D platforming is where it all started. I am entirely open minded to change, to an extent, but I just can't see a world where 2D platformers no longer exist . In a world where shooters now rule the freaking world, it's nice to look over to your left and see that the genre you grew up with still existing and is there to hold you and keep you safe from the oversaturation of shooters. I do agree that 3D Mario games > 2D Mario games, there's just no contest. Maybe give the reigns over to someone else for a while (would love to see Metroid return to it's roots), but entirely give up on 2d platforming, no way.

Well, I agree with all of these pretty much. Maybe not die completely and never been made again, but at least take a break. Work on a new IP, spend a few years doing that, and then... after 5 or 6 years after people start to forget about these old games, release a new one. Get people excited about it again, not just "Oh hey, another Call of Duty game." or "Ooh this Mario game has Co-Op, maybe I'll get it." A good example is GTA IV and GTA V. I haven't been this excited for a new game in a while, and its just the sheer fact that I haven't played a new GTA in a while and this one looks interesting.

I very much agree with most of this article, however I feel the title should be more like "Games that are past their best" but I understand the need to draw readers in. I dont know what I would do if Pokemon died, because its just so good, fair enough, after generation 3 it got rubbish, but everything before that just needs to be re-released with better graphics every few years in My opinion. also, I dont feel Assasins Creed needs to die atall, I just think it needs to take a long sleep and make itself good again.

I think they should co-exist as they both have different appeals (set-pieces vs. emotional tension). That way neither becomes stagnant. I would actually rather see uncharted 4 on ps4 before last of us 2, and I love post-apocalyptic settings. Might be because the zombie thing has been milked alot recently (ex. the whole walking dead franchise which is great but has gone spin-off crazy). Also we'll be seeing a fallout 4 from bethesda and a borderlands 3 soon enough so I think the apocalypse sub-genre will have enough games for the time being.

CoD is stale dude. Get over it. I've played them all since 3 and there has honestly been minimal development from 4 to BO2 and that's what 6 games across? New campaigns? They keep getting shorter and keep relying on more cheese. Sure, they sell, but that doesn't mean there could be more innovation or that the gaming industry exists because of said games. Look at the evolution of series like elder scrolls, uncharted (and the LoU transition), or LBP, Halo, Zelda, Infamous, Farcry, etc. Those games at least gave gamers room to breathe and provided noticeable graphical upgrades and gameplay innovations. CoD is just making enough effort to guarantee their annual 60 dollars from sheep. It was done with guitar hero and it's starting with AC...and I don't think it's good for gamers. It might be good for Activision, EA, Ubisoft, etc, but they're just building monopolies which are taking the true heart out of gaming. 2D mario does need to die btw. If nintendo release them still, just release them as cheap downloadables because they aren't up to par with other current games. I expect the same quality from something like pixel junk who sells their games for around 10 dollars.

So what you mean by "franchises that need to die" is actually just "popular franchises"? You sound like a hipster who hates popularity. You want to know who you will run into in the gaming industry that thinks Super Mario should go away? No one. Good luck in your pre-failed careeer.

You obviously don't play Pokemon at all beyond beating the gyms or haven't played since 1st generation. Pokemon has become one of the most complex games out there. Try to raise a Pokemon the right way with the correct nature, EV training it, move tutor. They've added a ton to the serious since Gen 1 and it's clear you haven't played since Gold/Silver era.

And what do you mean by innovation? All AC2 had that AC1 didn't was the ability to swim and a better story, they still kept the core, just like every game you've listed. They all retain their cores and build upon them.

The only one I agree with you on is Call of Duty - yes it needs to drastically innovate by adding a destructible environment and taking some risks.. but it doesn't need to die.

I agree with COD being on the list for the single player campaign but there is a huge demand for the multiplayer year after year so i don't blame them for reusing the same engine if people are foolish enough to pay for it.

The 2D Mario games seriously lack the imagination of the 3D ones. These few 2D levels in the Mario Galaxy games crush everything the NSMB series have to offer. when i comes to creativity.
Still so far there has only been one 2D Mario game per console, that´s ok. I would think most Nintendo fans would like to have access to one classic style 2D Mario platformer

I can only agree with two of your choices completely. Those are Sonic and MoH. Sega has whored out their old mascot for 20 years and have basically put the bullet in his head themselves. I can't see another quality Sonic game being released that doesn't feel like a less inspired retread of a Mario game. It seems that no matter what, EA cannot find developers to make a relevant competitive FPS in the age of CoD and Battlefield.

Others, like CoD, Gears, and Pokemon are all, or have been, multi-million selling games. They is still fun to be had with your friends, but it really is just more of the same, year after year.

As for AC and GoW, its really a toss up at this point. Yes, Ubi is bad about releasing what I almost consider add-ons for AC to hold us over between major games, but I must say I've have a lot of fun with every AC game. And until that changes I get each one from Gamefly, and buy it if its fun. Same goes for the God of War series. Though I agree that the story in this game is kind of pointless since we relived it in GoW 1. Also the multiplayer seems out of place in this genre.

But if I disagree with ANY of your choices, it's 2D Mario games. I get that they're sort of similar, but Nintendo basically invented (and perfected) the genre. I recently played, thanks to my wife buying a 3DS, New Super Mario Bros 2. I've been playing these games since I was 12 years old and the NES released and I still had a lot of fun. But thats just my opinion.
