It can all be summarized in one sentence. Too many damn weapons and ammo.

The story itself wasn't bad. The graphics were as usual top notch. The lone single most destructive direction they've taken on the series is to make it an action game. Survival horror cannot be an action shooter. It just doesn't work that way. Part of the survival mechanism is finding ammunition which in a well designed game like DS1 isn't easy to manage. You wind up shooting off more than you take in at zealot difficulty.

You actually used marketing as an excuse to call the game bad, you know..the part where we are talking about the story and gameplay? Idiot. The only thing I will give you on this list is the lack of horror. But what the hell are you expecting? Another entire game onboard a dark creepy ship? Then you would complain its too overused. Then you proceed to complain that suspense was not on the player about the relationship. Its a god damn horror Alien Zombie game. Not a love story. If you want love suspense go watch a chic flick. The game does not impose coop on you, just because a puzzle isnt as prioritized does not mean it is solely for coop, as you still managed to get it to work, didnt ya? Go complain about something else.

Ever since the beginning dialog. . .the inconsistency. . .the pure stupidity. . .really? I love the setting. I've loved it since I was kid, but this is insulting. NOT EVEN BY FUCKING ACCIDENT. Even at the end of the first game, YOU KNEW IT WAS THE UNITOLOGISTS. YOU KNEW THEY'RE EVIL. Why is Isaac so fucking stupid and ignorant to the idea of what the antagonists are? Did the developers not realize that Isaac was the engineer we've been playing THIS ENTIRE TIME and that he experienced FIRST HAND how the unitologists work, how the fucking plot developed because. . .jesus, really? Are we four years old? Why can't we have actual writers developing a story that is actually intriguing? This game, its concept, only deserves genius. Why can't Isaac be someone who we thought he was from the first game? This game seems like it's a Dead Space clone that does everything poorly, and if it was, I would forgive it. But it isn't, and that's what's the worst part. This is the pinnacle of science fiction horror videogames that we'll experience in our life.
In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2013/four-reasons-why-we-dont-need-a-dead-space-4#comment-152095">Jym</a>.

Honestly, I have a lot of gripes about Dead Space 3. And while I'm fine with Visceral trying something new, and even pretty okay with the lack of scares Dead Space 1 and 2 had, the game is frustrating.

And no, I don't mean 'this is so hard it's frustrating!'
I mean 'this is so tedious, boring, and clunky that I want to chuck my controller at the god damn wall.'

From Chapter 5 on, the game got more tedious. It was less interesting exploration and nerve wracking encounters and began to become more predictable. Repetitive. Bland. Even the puzzles and problems you had to solve and fix began to make me just pop out the disc and play something else.

I also hate how they handled the combat.

'So we want to keep our action oriented gameplay but still want to give the illusion this is still a survival horror franchise.'
'So the obvious answer is..'
..To give players ammo at every corner but make even the tiniest necromorph take a blue billion bullets to kill to give the illusion that you're always strapped for ammo?
....Making strategic dismemberment useless given limb shots have shoddy hitbox detection and do the same damage as pumping a necromorph full of bullets?
...To make resource collection a grind then offer players 'additional resources' through microtransactions like a F2P MMO?
..All of the above! Ding! We have a winner!

It's not just with necromorphs either. The human enemies can't even be dismembered. I took a full damage chipped line gun just to see if I could hack the unitologists apart with the rotator cuff. Know what I found out? That apparently firing it into their knees or arms..doesn't hurt them! That's right, it just goes on through, the hit isn't detected.

And later on in the game when you're doing these stupid minigames to 'hack open doors' where they make you use the left and right sticks simultaneously to open nodes through a maze to complete it? They made the mazes so arbitrarily complicated; ontop of the already very precise joystick sensitivity to where you press it to go made it nothing more than frustrating.

Past the first ten hours of the game, I just wanted it to be over. I wasn't having fun, but I dredged on to see the end of the game. To finish what I started.

And the ending was the biggest crock of shit I've seen out of an EA game I've purchased in a long time. Mass Effect 3 withstanding, I never got to play it.

Dead space 3 is definitely the worst in the franchise by far. Co-op was useless to me because this game in my mind is a single player game. I wondered way back when the first dead space came out if playing with a friend would be fun, it seemed like it at the time but after seeing it in front of me boy was i wrong. It takes the fear right out of the game, especially when isaac and carver are chattering to each other. The first dead space did everything so right and i still don't know if giving isaac a voice was the right call in dead space 2. Having a wordless protagonist could get boring for some but at very least they could have kept his talking to a minimum. Dead space 3 just blew the talking part right up, the full on conversations between carver and isaac did a great job of taking me out of the fear of the game. I have to say my biggest gripe about dead space 3 is the weapon crafting system. It gave you the ability to become a walking tank. I was never afraid once when i walked into a room because i had a force gun pulse rifle that basically smashed anything i walked into. The added 'universal' ammo just did wonders for making me feel comfortable just spraying at anything that moved because i never ran out of ammo. That's what the first dead space was about, conserving your ammo, picking your shots and only having one gun out to do it with. Which by the way....wtf happened to strategic dismemberment? The staple by which dead space became an awesome survival horror franchise? You walk into a room in the first dead space and you have 10 shots, necro's burst through the vents and doors and come from behind you. You had to take out their legs and arms to kill them or slow them down which made the game very nerve racking because if you miss those shots....your dead...in a gruesome way i might add. In dead space 3 i could spray my gun anywhere into a necromorph and it would fall dead. I even shot one once in the body and his arm and leg fell off! At one point i was using a machine gun and taking their limbs off and just walking through rooms like they were nothing. Does no one remember the first dead space? When they said guns don't work, you gotta grab a cutter or anything like that and cut them apart? How about the anime movie dead space: downfall? When the officers would fire their guns into the necromorph's and it looked like the bullets were just flying through them and not slowing them down? Well not anymore! Guns take them out easier then a plasma cutter does. I found myself just using the plasma cutter in dead space 3 just make the game feel a little more like the old dead space...and to give the necromorph's a chance. I was disappointed by dead space 3 in many ways (one more little gripe...the necro's bodies would disappear when they never did in previous games and that took me out of the experience as well, you could go a couple rooms ahead of a battle and then come back and the bodies are in different places or not there at all) but in the end i love the dead space franchise and only want to see it get better. Go back to its roots and do what made the franchise great in the beginning. It's funny how when u look at the box of the first dead space, it doesn't say visceral games on it. Then EA redwood becomes visceral and the development of the franchise and the games start going downhill. I'm not saying dead space 2 was a bad game, i enjoyed it. However it was the point in the franchise when action started to creep in more, isaac could talk and things just didn't feel as scary and tense as they did the first time around. In my opinion Visceral games has ruined this franchise and even though visceral is just a new name for the original developer of dead space i know some people left (Glen schofield) who worked on the original dead space and made it great. It's upsetting to see this franchise go the way it has but i have faith it will come back to its roots. They just need to remove all the head people of visceral games who have worked on dead space and get some fresh ideas and faces in their because the team who currently is behind dead space is butchering this game franchise.

You hit it on the head perfectly Joe. The scare factor is no longer there at all in this series. That suspense you spoke about is what made the original Resident evil game a classic and i'm hopeful that eventually more developers will go back to that formula instead of just making every enemy encounter as predictable as the next.

That's quite alright as you didn't miss much to begin with lol. The game got pretty mixed reviews when it came out so that proves they are starting to lose their flair with all these sequels getting made.

Thanks for your comment Jym and I'm glad that you enjoyed the article. You make some great points about the game and in particular what you liked and what you didn't like. I would have to agree that even with all the flaws, the content definitely was more compelling then any call of duty campaign story. i'm almost certain we will see another Dead space at some point because after all this is EA we are talking about here lol

I've noticed that as the series progressed each game got less and less scary. By scary i mean that the game actually doesn't try to scare you. In dead space 1 a lot of scenes and noises were scare factors and things that gave you suspense like random violin screeches and the necros that just run past you or the shadows. One distinct part in dead space 1 is where this torn up bloody guy is bashing his head on the wall, my first thought was what am i supposed to do...shoot it or approach? I didn't want to shoot him because it didn't look like a necromorph, so after getting nervous i slowly walked towards him all the while getting more nervous, like a jaws theme moment, and then bam he kills himself. Dead space 3 completely lacks any kind of scare tactics or suspense ambiance, if you ever see a corpse its either going to get up and attack you or just sit there because..its a corpse. Also in dead space 1 and 2 lights would constantly go out or on or flicker or turn back on after going out, and nothing would happen. Again dead space 3 lacks any time of lights going out randomly, its always for a reason easily deducible by what you have just done. Dead space 3 has the best looks and flow and is the longest game but its no longer a scary game, just gruesome. No enemies ever just pop out at you singularly in dead space 3 and proceed to actually hurt you, no quiet attacks from behind, they just pop out somewhere and come at you and can be taken down.

Great read on DS3, Rich. While I agree with a lot of the points you make, i also give Visceral a lot of credit for not just rehashing the "survival horror" game that they have made twice (awesomely) already. The last boss fight in Dead Space 2 was inside Isaac's own mind, against a vision of his ex/dead girlfriend and against the "marker" itself. Can you really just go back to necromorphs jumping out and scaring you? By the time a series reaches it's third volume, it needs to expand and try new things or it ends up like Silent Hill (Which by game 4 was unbearably dull). Visceral tried something VERY different, and while it falters sometimes, i think it was still a great game to play.

Aspects I liked:
Seeing more unitologists/crazier side of unitology
-New characters(their contributions are slight, but Buckell's line about contributing to a cause instead of fearing for his life is really a great quote)
-customizable weapons (you are an engineer, right?)
-military weapons that kinda suck(read above)
-optional/co-op only missions

-blood moon design
-getting to see convergence! (lets be honest, being in the vortex was pretty exciting.
-still looks better than any game on the market.

Aspects I didn't like:
-Didn't get to fight Danik (he was kind of like Dr. Wily, always getting away...)
-Choppy action during crazier battles
-Final boss
-lack of bosses in general (Snow beast should've been once, would've liked to see -another hive mind or the "gods" on the cliff side)

-Glossing over Ellie's eye (not a huge thing, but just explaining it in a text log?)
-Phil effing Collins in the commercial? WORST part about it. They used Pelican (an amazing metal band from Chicago if you are not familiar) in the credits but PHIL EFFING COLLINS in the ad?

As a foot note, this game has more story/character/beauty/terror/awesomeness by itself than the entire call of duty and halo series' (I won't even capitalize their names because these games are AWFUL.)

Sorry for talking trash, but it bothers me that games made for simpletons keep on selling and Dead Space gets a bad rep for trying something different.

I love the dead space franchise and I pretty much agree with most of what dislike about DS3, especially sacrificing the single horror survival experience for an action pack co-operative experience. I'm hope they'll allow me to make a rate R version of the film.

check out my Live action interpretation of DS.
