"Hardcore" gamers are usually boys with enough money to waste on games, time to waste on gamING, and not much else in their lives. When I was 12 or 13, I was "hardcore" as well, because hell, 13 yr olds aren't working and supporting families and giving birth to little boys who will grow up to denigrate their mothers for having them instead of being a hardcore gamer in the first place. ("I coulda been a contender!") Casual gamers don't all play Farmville. I personally play whatever the hell I want to at any given time. I hate Farmville. I play Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell and many others of any and all types and on PC, console or wherever as long as I feel like it. I am not hemmed into any box, I am not labeled anything. I don't subscribe to titles to give me a sense of self worth. I could spend a month without playing a game and then spend almost a month doing hardly anything else. No other gamer gets to decide who and what I am. That's for their little minds that can't process things like free will and not having an overwhelming need for some stranger to approve of them. Casual gaming actually makes a shit-ton of money and appeals to older women because face it, they're the ones working all day to make it possible for their shit stain sons to be "hardcore" gamers, so they don't have the time to sit around indulging themselves all day. They actually have you know, LIFE to live. This is why so many boys want women to make them sandwiches. They're so used to sitting on their asses and fiddling with joysticks and pushing buttons (OMG so difficult) that they're atrophied in mind and body, unable to put a slab of flesh between two pieces of bread (that their moms most likely paid for, along with their chair, their console AND their games.) For grown men who still play games at that level, well it's your life to waste. Games should be a diversion from things in life, not a substitute for it. That's my opinion, and it can't be wrong by definition.

These are some very valid points that you're making. No doubt the economy is to blame for alot of the financial setbacks going on in the world today. As for the Casual games market, I don't get the feeling that it is still popular as it once was mainly because of the constant appeal of hardcore games. If I had a chance between playing words with friends on my iPhone and Injustice: Gods Among Us on the Xbox 360 then i will always choose Injustice for the sheer fact that it appeals to me more and can be a far more enjoyable experience than the other game. But all of this is just my own personal opinion.

So they're starting to see gaming in general as a fad? I find this peculiar, you'll always find a game you'll like regardless of your daily routine. The point is, games are too good to flat-out ignore, there must be something far greater at hand here. Maybe the growing economic decline may have a role, not everybody is willing to adopt a $300-$400 system and pay $60 for a new game every month if they're struggling to keep food on the table. Maybe when the economy completely recovers will we see things change again. Just a thought.
