I think Dragon's Dogma was a great game and the very embodiment of action RPG I mean it even lets you scale the larger monsters, which are everywhere in the game world. The main flaw would be the confusing timeline of Arisen's. Great article though.

In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2013/top-5-action-rpgs-of-the-generation#comment-152621">old school 20d</a>.

Diablo III has great pacing, stellar visuals, addicting gameplay and overall a good story. However, I felt it lacked real depth in the character progression, customization and the loot tables near the end of the game seemed way out of wack. Plus, I played on PC, so I had to deal with stuff like the real money auction house and always-online + server issues.

Good game that I definitely recommend - I hope you enjoy it! If you have a decent mid-range PC, you can definitely play the other 4 games on this list as well, all of which I consider to be better.

I do agree with you on one major point. Good crawlers are few and far between. Baulder's Gate, Champions of Norrath, took the old school Gauntlet and spiced it up. These were great games to play single or co-op. They were simple to play and you had a story to go with. Then everything went FPS and online and no-one cared about the story anymore. Gone were the days you and a buddy, or solo, go hack some goblins. Games such as Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, and Mass Effect put the story back into games, but with the story came alot of errands. There have been some decent crawlers, but some tried to put too much into them and became too much of a hassle to play. Others too simple and not enough $ put into them. I guess I am too old fashion. I will play Diablo 3. I just hope it is what I am hoping for.

Kingdoms of Amalur in my opinion is more of a open world RPG similar to Dragon Age. I personally think action RPG's and dungeon crawlers have a much more to the point story. An open world RPG you tend to find a much more in depth story, meaning more chitty chat and less PEWPEW. I like your taste in games though I have to quibble your position of Diablo 3; Blizzard promised to much from the title which harmed how people viewed the game. Anyways, nice article.

Peace

Agreed! Very underrated game and the console controls are done very, very well! I hope the genre sticks around as long as possible, as it is one of the most re-playable and can be extremely deep in terms of character development.

Since several comments are already being posted that clearly did not read the opening sentence of the article, I will go ahead and paste that sentence here as well:

"To be clear, this list is in regards to isometric-styled hack-and-slash action RPGs."

It's nice to see Sacred 2 recognised, that's one good RPG. And lately it's important to enjoy every good iso ARPG you can find, because who knows how long they'll still be around.
