While they might not affect people of a sane state of mind, they do end up desensitizing people to violence..which is a huge issue on its own. Violence really should never be something you just shrug at. Not in a functioning and prosperous society, anyway.

I still cannot grasp why videogames are always the first target for violence...news media perpetuates violence more than all the gta's combined. Except they're showing "real" brutality. If anything videogames condition us to learn how to deal w intense, fast paced and overwhelming real life situations ie. American society.

I wonder if there's any difference between the effects of violence in a single player game and a multiplayer game (not counting the trashtalk that tends to be involved in the latter - let's say voice chat was disabled completely)? e.g. Is there a different feeling that accompanies killing a character controlled by another real person as opposed to one controlled by AI? I can't speak from experience as I only play single-player.

I don't think I've ever seen this question raised, let alone addressed.

This is a great piece and it sounds like the panel was awesome. I personally think there will always be a consensus of people that will argue that Violent video games are the root of all evil and the cause of most crimes today. I would just like to state that I feel people should take responsibility for their actions instead of blaming an artform that's meant to entertain. If people don't know the difference between entertainment and reality then chances are those individuals who commit acts of violence now are already a lost cause.
