After reading this I instantly thought of Chrono Cross. For those who don’t know (and who don’t mind spoilers), the final battle takes place in the Darkness Beyond Time – a place where all things in eliminated timelines end up – and to get the true ending you need to defeat it by playing a song using different colour elements. It was criticised by fans but I always thought the lack of music added more to the atmosphere than any piece of music could have.

In reply to Jennie Bharaj. Please do! You won't regret it. It's one of the most intense fights I've ever experienced in a video game, though it's not actually a boss fight. It's as much of a boss fight as you can get in an adventure game.

I remember playing a boss fight in Heavenly Sword where the music was peaceful and calm. It was very weird, but it added so much more to the game. I definitely want to play Walking Dead now. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a silent boss fight!
