The quote from the article says “AMD’s console APU is limited feature-wise compared to Nvidia’s GTX
cards so PC gamers who use Nvidia get more GPU features like hardware
based PhysX and CUDA technology that console gamers can’t utilize.”
This is incorrect. The AMD APUs are NOT limited feature-wise compared to nVidia GTX cards. They ARE capable of "GPU features LIKE hardware based PhysX and CUDA technology". You are correct they don't use CUDA specifically because it's an nVidia proprietary API (although nVidia DID liscence PhysX to the console makers even though their APUs are made by AMD... not having support for PhysX on ANY console games this generation would have likely resulted in the death of PhysX). They do not use OpenCL either. Sure that's what AMD PC cards might use instead of CUDA but consoles aren't PCs. Consoles have their own custom APIs that are closer to the metal than PC APIs. These custom APIs DO offer features LIKE those provided by CUDA on PCs.

Havok, PhysX, APEX (another nVidia API on PCs), and many APIs are available to console developers to choose from, or they can roll their own if they like. The hardware DOES support the necessary functionality.

CUDA is exclusive to NVIDIA. I wasn't wrong. Its equivalent is available on AMD cards, but it's not CUDA nor is it as powerful.

First consoles have ALWAYS been weaker than a tricked out PC. That said it is true that this console generation is weaker in relation to PCs at launch then prior ones. We have the Wii to thank for that since Nintendo proved to MS and Sony that spending a bunch of money on R&D for bleeding edge hardware was a waste of money.

This is also the first generation where no one is selling the console for a loss at launch. Historically launch consoles cost the buyer less than the hardware was worth and the platform holders made up the difference via the licensing fees on the games. Those days are over, again thanks to Nintendo who proved you can sell a console at or slightly above cost instead of below and still end up #1.

All that being said the current generation is a significant jump from the last with support for > 8GB of RAM so 64bit gaming is now a reality (even on PCs games that are 64bit only are just now beginning to appear since consoles now support this.) Also the current gen DOES support compute shaders which do things like hardware physics and CUDA where your friend is simply wrong in saying they don't. Likewise there is no way a 5 year old PC does 4k gaming. Only the most recent hardware is capable of 4k gaming which typically requires expensive SLI setups where just one graphics card likely costs more than a PS4 or Xbox One.

Last gen couldn't do 1080p except on the most basic of games. The vast majority of PS3/Xbox 360 games were 720p. This generation targets 1080p. Very few people even have 4k TVs and there is virtually no content for them.

That's a whole other debate lol I didn't compare PCs to console to show which is better. I did it so people could see that they their "SUVs" can't do what a "sports car" can. Great analogy! I'm using that one!

My name is Torrence Davis and I approve this message!

Gamers just need to educate themselves and they won't be disappointed anymore. Simple as that. On a side note, I really miss Jagon. :(

Well said Tony. I also love how Tor kept it real and honest, but also mentioned that even his machine can't always hold consistent performance.

Next year will hopefully show that 1080p and 60fps aren't everything.

Now if people will stop saying 60fps should be the standard for everything, maybe things will get better.
