Long story short, people are stupid and sometimes you get riff Raff expecting themselves to be entitled and special.

The truth is, no one cares sadly.
By that, I mean most of the world who would otherwise skipped these sites and articles altogether and just do whatever needs done in life... Yes they have a life.

Makes me wonder when people would grow up and stop defending something as a organization or community and stand up as an individual.

Its like everyone pulls out a big brother card whenever they can't win a argument. Can't win your battles? Get someone else involved.

Also, while the minority are making a big fuss, the rest of the world are moving on... Yes, gamers are still a minority in the world compared to everyone else, no one is special.

In reply to <a href="https://thekoalition.com/2014/dont-be-a-gamer#comment-154897">Nick Thomas</a>.

I agree. I have no problem with the term "Gamer" just like I have no problem with the term "Audiophile". However, the really messed up sense of identity that term brings is the problem. Honestly, I think it comes from the way "Nerd" culture has been ostracized and depicted over the years that many of us have come to take on these terms such as "Nerd" and "Gamer" and "Geek" as a badge of honor - or even a shield. However, in doing so, we ostracize each other now - picking and choosing who true "nerds" and "gamers" are because what was a term of belittlement is now a term of strength and we don't want no damn flappy birds players in our super exclusive club. Now you have to fit the qualifications to get in, and if you don't, you are ostracized from the group that was once ostracized itself.

Unfortunately, too many loudmouth gamers are playing into their own stereotype - people such as Jim Sterling and AVGN use the stereotype to push their views, many gamers throw childish fits when their game isn't EXACTLY what they wanted (Mass Effect 3 for example) when someone has the audacity to question the quality of the medium the gamers go up in arms to defeat them - only to put the appearance of truth to the lies. A strong example is Anita Sarkeesian and her Feminist Frequency videos, including the recent Gamer's Gate Debacle.

Now, I'm not saying I agree with her or that her arguments have any merit (they don't), but just look at the level of flack she has gotten. I wholeheartedly disagree with her approach and will argue against it until I am blue in the face, but this... THIS? http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118310-Flash-Game-Makes-Players-Beat-Up-Tropes-vs-Women-Creator

IS DISGUSTING!

The same goes to Phil Fish (Once again, don't inherently like the guy, but still... come on guys!) Death threats are commonplace whenever someone tries to rock the "gamer" boat. It's childish, it's stupid and it only continues to promote the stereotype that we are fat, lazy, misogamist, racist, homophobic jackasses.

Oh, and do I really need to even talk about EA's relatively recent trash? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh3FN3YCwYk

I'm somewhat disappointed in the short sightedness of this article. First and foremost is the title of "gamer" and what it means. Gamer is the same thing as audiophile and car connoisseur. These are people who have a real interest in their hobby and put a great deal of effort into doing it and becoming part of a community. But these communities have large diverse subsets within them much like how gaming is portrayed. Being a gamer puts you in the category and it differentiates a person from others. You bring up the difference between CoD and Flappy bird yet fail to see the similarity in those that nitpick over full package modified high end cars vs someone who buys a barebones KIA. I'm a gamer because I put a LOT of money and time into playing.

The other issue is the artist connection. Mass Effect is a prime example of where art and gaming are separated when they shouldn't be. Games can be art. I'm not doubting that. But games are primarily entertainment. People pay $50-$70 to play and enjoy a game and when they pay that much for something that is terrible then like any consumer, they will get mad. And there is the big disconnect. Gamer's aren't patrons of the arts, they're consumers of a product. Consumers who have been badly abused and labelled by not only a corrupt game media but by the developers themselves. The term, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" is very appropriate here and is a major reason for the push back.

This article flps between saying people who play games get generalised and all put into one pile, and that's bad, which it is, but then it goes on to do exactly that by stating "Ready at Dawn has faced countless committee suggestions” from "gamers"" as if everyone did/does it.

With ME3, most of the outrage from what I can remember came from the fact that the developers always stated that your choices would matter, that it wouldn't just be a 'good, bad, or neutral' ending, but that is what was delivered with the ending and people were rightly upset. The resulting articles from the games media, stating "gamers" were "self entitled babies" would be what I would call disgusting, just like what has happened recently with GamerGate.

The statement "“Gamers” have begun to ostracize individuals that
exclusively play
genres or series’ that are deemed to be inferior or not worthy" is just
what happens in almost any area of life, especially when such a broad
spectrum of people get lumped together under one title, they form
cliques / subgroups of people with the same tastes that shun / make fun
of / joke with other groups, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Yes people will voice their opinions on how games should be made, especially with how easy it is to get your opinion out there now, but I agree, and I hope most people would too, that games developers should be able to create any game they wish, however they wish, without having to change it for any group of people. In the end I believe most people will "vote with their wallets" and buy games they want, and ignore games they don't.

This article, to me at least, comes across a little like all those "Gamers are Dead" articles that came up on the 28th. If people wish to call themselves gamers, then fine, but saying "be more" just comes across as you think less of anyone that does call themselves a gamer.

It's not really about the term, it's about the rifts that appear within the consumer base because of its use, about the attitudes and arguments created when you try and fit a diverse group of individuals under the miniscule confines of a solitary, throwaway term. Anytime people are looked upon negatively in any way for pursuing their own personal happiness and entertainment, something's wrong. Not only that, but the fractures created by elitism and self-entitlement are a dangerous thing as well, for instance, an audience taking creative control away from the producer of their entertainment; consumer input is rightly justified, but creative control should ultimately lie with the one doing the actual creating. This isn't an article about a term, it's an article about people, a plea to the people to not get caught up in the semantics of what should be a meaningless word, but instead sows unimaginable chaos.
