It definitely seems like the more GG tries to <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2k29qc/gamergate_condemns_doxxing_felicia_day/" rel="nofollow">distance itself</a> from female figureheads to avoid this exact thing, the more the media picks up on them and parades them around as helpless victims of a demographic they whitewash us all with. The football guy is just another white knight, they're a dime a dozen. Felicia got attacked because misogyny is SO HOT right now. *hair flip*

Speaking of white knight douchebaggery, cue the ignorant Wheaton rebuttal in 3...2...1...

Hence why I say this is a whole big mess. I don't doubt this is happening to some capacity.

Here is something new to lend credence to this: Some NFL dude put out a really vitriolic attack against GG the other day and he wasn't attacked. Felicia Day makes a post on her Tumblr just talking about why she has stayed out of it (she said she is scared) and then she was attacked. So the big scary football dude talking shit gets a pass but Felicia Day doesn't? Orchestrated? Who knows.

Keep in mind there were plain clothes officers embedded in Occupy just to shit-stir and arrest otherwise peaceful people.

I'm glad you brought up Occupy Wall Street because this is somewhat similar. The movement had noble intentions in the beginning but because of the vandals and rapists, the original message got lost. You can't effectively convey a message when people use the movement to do terrible things. You can praise the virtues of it all day long but no one is going to listen to you.

YouTube and Twitch is where this industry is going and I welcome that. The established media is a dinosaur that's living AFTER the meteor hit. It's just a matter of time before they die out and the meek rodents who once cowered under them inherit the land. You can see this happening and I think it's great. Skip the middle man and just watch how the games play. Totally for that.

And yeah, I hate to break it to the big guys but GG isn't going anywhere. The internet has the collective attention span of a retarded fish so the fact that this is still going speaks volumes about its longevity. However, that is a bit of a problem for me personally. With no clear direction/leader/message, it's hard to sustain this battle when what you're fighting for isn't clear. My personal fight is to show the world that gamers and games are awesome. That's something I can sustain. Sending letters to advertisers and constantly looking for "gotcha" tweets from the opposition isn't something I want to do or have time for. If it were for a goal then okay, but I don't see where this is ultimately going.

Like I said in the editorial, I'm not against GG and never will be. I just know that I can preach my message more effectively without the movement since it has so much negativity surrounding it. I really hope that this all leads to something positive and doesn't degenerate into the mess that Occupy did. This isn't close to hitting that point but it could. We'll see how it goes.

Your problem is with disorganized dissent--that's why the 'Occupy' movements never really accomplished much, it was just whole swarms of pissed-off people who joined the movement for similar reasons. You will never get a group like Occupy, or GG into lock-step formation and all wave the banner for the same reasons. It just doesn't work like that.

Besides, anti-GG would LOVE for us to have a leader--a straw man they can point to and say "This person is a lunatic/has opinions I don't agree with, so fuck their whole message." They've already done it with Christina Hoff Summers, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Adam Baldwin for daring to speak out for GG. They use the "conservative" argument (even though CHS is a registered dem and has been published under every stripe, but uneducated attacking is par for the course in this fight). Women and minorities who don't agree have been erased to suit their narrative. GG has been publicly against doxxing ANYONE, but now we're learning that self-doxxing is a thing. There seems to be no end to the hoops anti-GG will go through to dismiss us as a hate group. There seems to be no end to the hoops anti-GG will go through to dismiss us as a hate group. All that Kotaku, Gamasutra, et al had to do was apologize to their bread and butter (gamers, remember?), come out with a transparent code of ethics and actually stick to it. But instead, they dug their heels in under the same old "You neckbeards must not want women in games" bullshit and here we are.

Any asshole can jump into the hashtag (or IRC channels, as it were) and make death threats against any of the anti-GG women, and then that gets trumped up and pointed at to invalidate the rest of GG. Again, this is a result of disorganized dissent, which is open and free to anyone. I have yet to meet a gamer that was actually misogynistic, but the word gets thrown around so often that it's a bogeyman nobody wants to identify with.

The hashtag is just the PR portion--everyone knows shit-slinging doesn't accomplish much other than everyone gets covered in shit. It's a full-time whack-a-troll job in there, so I've been limiting my time, too. But the heartfelt, personal messages we've been sending to advertisers will keep up as long as the 'big guys' keep their loyalty on clicks and hits rather than on their reader base.

Besides, have you SEEN how big youtubers and streamers have been blowing up? Gamers don't want to read about how a game makes the reviewer *feel*, they want to see mechanics and storyline and gameplay. They want to know if the game is worth purchasing WITHOUT having to stop and think what biased filter it's going through, or whether or not the developers and press are fellating each other for more coverage.

So no, GG is not over. The big video game bloggers (let's be real) haven't learned anything; they're still being paid to lie and slander and help their buddies. The lights finally got switched on and all the cockroaches scattered. But they're not gone.

Fuck the hashtags. It might not be everyone but the few assholes who are using the hashtag and threatening and harassing people is just tarnishing it. it still isn't right for the people to blanket everyone who used the hastags as a part of the assholes though.

Really this whole gamers are misogynist, racist, etc shouldn't be focused on gamers. It's more about internet culture. You can go look at a youtube video of kittens and look at the comment section and see "Nigger" this, and other shit that has nothing to do with the actual subject of the video. It's internet and the anonymity it gives you, that is the real problem here.

it just so happens that the internet is how most of us that game communicate with each other, and this just let's the anonymous assholes spew their hate in comfort.
