Well, I'm 44 and grew up with games and the games grew up with me. The games I play now are almost always Certificate 15 or 18 and have adult content and depth. It's because gaming is a NEW art form compared to movies, books, why some people associate it with kids. There was a videogame banned in the 00's, that wouldn't have been banned if it was a movie (Rule of Rose) - but because it's a videogame it's seen as not being adult-enough a medium. I'd have though anyone under 40 years old would know that gaming is for life though. :)

I liked your comments. I mean, if you were blowing off work or spending time with family to game I could see a problem, but if you are taking time like I do to sit for an hour and play a game after everyone has gone to bed and relax and enjoy the game play the art and the story etc I cannot think of a better hour to myself unless I am drawing.

I am 34, married and I have 4 kids. I work as a Physical Therapy tech in the day and am working nights at UPS as well as go to college online. I have played games as long as I can remember and the reason is two fold: one, they are fun and two since I have always been into art there is a draw to the artistic side of the games. I probably game 5 hours a week maybe 10 on a heavy week.
anyway, my wife who is 28 said I am immature because I laughed at a game I was playing (NBA 2K My career) I may be asking a bunch of biased gamers but do you guys think my wife was rude for saying that? I mean, she was on her laptop obessing about one direction and listening to their new album when she heard me enjoying my game...
I sometimes wonder if I am indeed too old to game but then leisure activities like movies and music and other hobbies could be considered "immature" what do you all think?

You're right it probably won't go away. I don't let people know about my guilty pleasure either. But with gaming systems like the wii in rest homes and families playing together, helps me to believe maybe many don't play because they feel they are too complex and not that it's just immature to play them.
I work for a major cellular retailer and i once had this 70-ish year old lady come in my store and her only problem with her cellphone was that her "Hay Day" game froze and she didn't want to lose her high score! Lol! True story.

Great article! I am 48 and i just ordered an Xbox one. I've had an on and off relationship with gaming for over 20 + years, always coming back to it in some form, be it a console, handheld, or smartphone.
I sometimes wonder what people think about a near 50 year old man playing video games. I imagine some would feel that it's childish and immature. But In my eyes it's no different than men my age who own radio controlled, gas or battery operated planes, trains, and cars. Or bigger more expensive toys like sport bikes and exotic sports cars. I'd imagine any hobby or passion for most of them, it's an escape, a way to decompress. And there's nothing wrong with that.
That being said an obsession is an obsession. If a hobby or passion of yours consumes your life, preventing you from taking care of yourself, family, or business in general, then that's a problem! Too much of anything is not good!
But at the end of the day, responsible gaming, or any hobby, if it makes you happy and bring you pleasure, so be it, game on!

The reality for me is that I don't let anyone know I'm a gamer unless they are too. Where I live, if you play anything other than Call of Duty on a casual basis...prepare for people to lose a big chunk of respect for you right off the bat. Personally, I've cut away most of my gaming habits not because of losing interest in gaming, but because of social stigma.

Anyway...it's hard to ignore history, context, and culture when it comes to forming social opinions, and gaming has a lot of embarrassing and still typically true preconceptions attached to it. I don't see how it can realistically go away.

"It’s also likely that the same people who look down upon an adult gamer have their own hobbies or activities that they do for fun, so what makes gaming so different? I believe that gaming should be respected on the same level as any other form of entertainment."

Gaming is different because it is seen as playing with toys. Children used to buy GI Joe action figures and make them fight imaginary battles. They would also run around the yard playing war games pretending to shoot each other. Video games came along and made this same
play much better. Instead of GI Joe, a boy could play Contra. It was no longer all in the imagination; there was AI and built in rules. It provided a much better simulation.

Light hearted games fit somewhere between Playschool and Disney presentation wise, while almost all of the games rated as Mature are typically anything but mature in their presentation. They remind me when I was a kid / teen and most boys thought that explosions, weapons of any type, bloody wounds, skulls, wizards, dragons, ninjas, etc were all awesome.

Most Mature rated games are rated Mature for the juvenile way they depict violence and other subject matter. Woah we have a chainsaw bayonet on our assault rifle... awesome! I don't hate that attitude at all, but it is something most guys outgrow beyond their teen years.

You said there are an abundance of games that appeal to adults and show a picture of Bloodborne. But to me that games does not appeal to adults. It looks like a game for teen boys. It reminds me of having battles with action figures; its like playing with digital toys.

I am not saying this is right or wrong but I believe this is why people view adult gamers the way they do.

I agree with your article and appreciate the message. I am a gamer in my 30s, have a family and am successful. I have long puzzled over the sentiment from many others that I am childish or immature or waste my time with gaming. I whole heartedly agree that gaming is a perfectly acceptable form of entertainment and even a step above TV or movies in that you are interactive and thoughtful. Sure, when you watch something, there is catharsis involved, but to really put someone in that character's role and be forced to make decisions, gaming is much more immersive.

The best case that I can make of a divisive factor is one of imagination. I find that acquaintances of mine that prefer the mundane without the occult or fantasy(realistic fiction/sports/nonfiction), tend to not appreciate gaming. Those that like more fantastical or thought provoking fiction, tend to be those that do appreciate it. I don't blame those people, we are made the way we are. However, I do think that the ability and desire to see an unfamiliar world, character or interaction as something real enough to care about is what sets the groups apart. Would you rather be told something believable, or be involved in something fantastic?

Thoughts?

1. You have to take into account that gaming is a new thing, we are the first generations growing with videogames since we were kids. So, for older people is weird that an adult keeps doing kids stuff (and will not be seen as a good thing in your resume). It happened before with many other things like new careers or hobbies.

2. Part of the criticism to TV can be applied to games. The thing is that your brain isn't working to imaging or create, like with a book, is like you are getting everything chewed, for your brain to do just a little of processing. I say in part because there is a lot of problem solving, coordination and many other things and skills. I recommend this book: Homo Videns by Giovanni Sartori.

3. Take this as an advice. Don't give a fuck about what other people think in this regard as long as you are happy with yourself and don't harm anybody (including yourself).

29 year old gamer, about to get married and doing pretty good in my career (not related to videogames, sadly).

As long as those bills are paid, the fridge is full and the family are happy then you should feel happy in enjoying gaming. Thanks for the comment man, I'm glad there are others who feel the same.

Completely agree, I'm sometimes afraid to bring up gaming as hobby because of the "looks" I get. But, those same people will completely ignore their family to read a book or blow time posting on social media sites for hours and hours.

Good article.

Great article. I've often felt this way myself, now 29. For me video games are not only fun and entertaining but a way to relieve stress and break from reality. My bills are paid, my fridge is full and my family is taken care of. I may spend the occasional day gaming for many hours but it's something I really love to do, something that has nearly defined my childhood. You're not alone fellow gamer, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment man, you summed up the feeling so well here. Hopefully this negative stigma will go away at some point. But for now we'll just have to stand our ground and be proud of who we are.

I have been passionate about gaming since my first time playing on my Atari 2600. It never stopped and will never stop. I am 39 now and yes sometime i do feel the shame that you are talking about here. I am with you , I do not understand why its ok for someone to "netflix binge" or watch Tv hours on end but its not ok if i choose to game instead.

The double standard does exist. And here is an example that to this day still puzzled me. When i was writing up a résumé "curriculum vitae" to apply for some jobs, I was told by a professional to not write in my personal info that i was a gamer. Of course it was ok that i was a sport enthusiast and played many sport including my other passion Hockey, but gaming a no no because it would be view in a negative ways.

Puzzling that this is still the case in 2014 but not surprising.
