Sure, a new IP is great, but what if they took this concept and applied to the Mario from Super Mario Sunshine? Attach a F.L.U.D.D. to the back of various different Mushroom Kingdom characters (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, maybe even have Yoshi spray juice from his mouth like Sunshine) and outfit them with different colors of ink and there you go. I really loved Sunshine, so that could have been a cool way to return to that concept.

It looks really fun though, with or without Mario.
