Those who are anime fans have a whole lot to love about Bandai Namco’s anime mash-up fighter J-Stars: Victory VS. The game features many popular characters from many anime series featured in Shonen Jump magazine. When playing it at E3 2015 for the first time I noticed many similarities to the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series, which has the same stylized look and control setup. The appeal here is in the gathering of colorful characters from beloved series like Dragonball Z, YuYu Hakusho, Naruto, Fist of the North Star, and many more.
I was able to get into a match with an all-star team of three that included Naruto, Goku, and Ichigo Kurasaki (Bleach). Much like the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series, you have one main playable character that you can use throughout the match alongside two assist characters. The real difference here is that one of your allies is on the map alongside you, while the last one is an assist that appears when you hit the shoulder respective button. The rest of the fighting and spectacle of the game is as I would have imagined it; Japanese dialogue with flashy, earth-shattering moves launched at opponents.
The match I played was against characters not playable in the demo, including Kenshin Imura from Rurouni Kenshin, Gintoki Sakata from Gin Tama, and Luffy from One Piece. Everyone in the match had a moment to shine from either a special attack or an assist from either side. While the match did seem a bit drawn out sometimes, I still loved watching these characters trade blows with each another.
Seeing this all play out on screen felt like watching a crazy fighting fan fiction come to life before my eyes. Anime fans are definitely going to want to look into J-Stars Victory VS when it finally releases on all PlayStation platforms this June.
