I’ve been playing SotN on my Vita for the first time (I missed it while growing up) after playing Bloodborne last year, and I can definitely see what the author is talking about. In fact, I stumbled upon this article as I was curious if the similarities have been discussed. I hadn’t played a Castlevania since Bloodlines on my Genesis, so I had forgotten much of it. Both games are great, and I’m glad I’m not alone in seeing the similarity.

I thought this whilst playing games too. Take the principles of Symphony of the Night and make a 3d action platformer and you end up with Bloodborne.

meh, just because it has the lvl design, horror and boss battles doesnt make it castlelaviania, but than again I have only seen the later castlelaviania games. Its a pure souls game first and the souls games clearly come from the kingsfield series and miyasaki never said anything about castleasivaixgnainia, while never shaming away from other inspirations. But its nice to hear there may be enjoyment in castleavavania games for me as a souls fan and ill recommend a souls game whenever ill come across castlelavanaiania game 🙂

Don’t get me wrong, the game is very challenging. But like Castlevania, you can overcome the challenges if you stick with it and figure out the enemy patterns. Once you get the mechanics down, the game is not that difficult.

Great article Tony. I LOVE Castlevania. And the graphics in Bloodborne look amazing. I’m just worried cause of it’s reputation for being so ridiculously hard. I never got into the Demon/Dark Souls games for this reason. But YOUR article comparing it to Castlevania (on top of the consistent above average high review scores) are leading me to believe I must get this game despite it’s difficulty.

I am looking and hunger for games with “compelling darkness” in them in the newer gens. I think I am ready now to buy my first game of the newer gen. This game looks like it will sate my Great Appetite.

In reply to John Jeffrey Tambanillo. Konami are the main reason why the last Castlevania game sucked lol They wanted to create two different games and basically turned off fans by doing so. Definitely glad they won't attempt to do Silent Hills now because fans of that series deserve better.

I see the similarities. I just bought Bloodborne last week and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to never fight two enemies at once.
