I think if they could do one of a few things.
Give her a spin off of her own, or make her an option at the beginning. Link wouldn't have to go anywhere that way.
Personally, i'd have no problem with a gender option at the beginning of a game. Link is meant to be a player avatar, he is not a character, he is you.

One time we played as a goron with a link hat on. One time link was a wolf with a girl riding on his back, with no green hat at all.

This is a girl. Is it that different?

The timeline was an admitted retcon, and entirely optional.

If FF released a book connecting every Final Fantasy game, would you choose to believe it? Considering any kind of "timeline" is throwing a wrench into something that is otherwise a great anthology of titles based on a similar theme. Trying to look too deep into it is just going to ruin it for you.

Yeah true. Nintendo is facing a similar problem with its Zelda franchise similar to how many other companies are (over doing it). Assassins Creeds, CODs, NFSs, Mortal Kombats, Battle Fields, Forzas, Halos and the list goes on.
Nintendo are a great company when it comes to their major franchise, and Nintendo are good at spreading their sequels. One Metroid per in the WiiU gen wouldnt have hurt though.
This is the primary reason that Linkle (or equivalent) shoulda become a new franchise IP. The longer they run their Zelda series the harder it becomes to keep the story engaged and coherant. Nintendo's just shy to test new IPs (like everyone else).
But i too do love characters like Minda, Zelda/Shiek, Rosalina, Marth, Lucinda and so on. Nintendo could be making prominent titles with these as leads, as opposed to bending the Zelda series like this.

On a slightly different note. Im not the biggest fan of Nintendos characters not aging. Its why TV dramas hook ppl for so long, they follow characters growing up, aging , maybe dying or moving on and leaving a legacy.
Link, Samus, F-zero crew, etc.. all being static. In another 20 years from now Samus might still be a fit athletic hunter in her wonderous suit beam blasting Pirates all over the galaxy (and blowing up every planet along the way).
 Kinda wears a bit

You bring up some excellent points. I think the character looks awesome and can't wait to play her in Hyrule Warriors. However, stating that she will be considered for future titles (which could mean canonical titles), there are issues and questions now. The timeline imo is screwed up as it is and has only gotten worse with the additions they made in the Hyrule Historia.

However, if she is to be included, then it is only fair that Lana, Cia and the villains that help her also get considered for future titles. I remember that some didn't fully take a liking to those characters but were relieved that they were only in a 'spin-off" title, but now Linkle, whom we haven't even played as yet, is already be considered for other games? I actually loved those characters and feel that they shouldn't be left out at this point.

As for Linkle's story, we would have to see how she is being incorporated. Nintendo has never once said that she is a "female Link" but an original character who "aspires to be a hero" which is a totally different angle than how Link gets wrapped up into things. I love the design, but I do feel a little saddened that it would seem that the only reason why so many gaming outlets are giving attention to her just for a spin-off game is because they so desire for her to be the Hero Destiny in future games while other characters like Zelda, Impa or even Midna remain forgotten - although Nintendo never even confirmed this.

I've been a life long Nintendo gamer (and PC gamer, current age 31 (male too btw). I played most all major zelda titles. I didnt even know they followed a coherant timeline, thought each major new zelda was just a 100 year gap or something with a new legend coming to age again.
It woulda been better if Nontendo could have made a new female IP. But as long as this Linke gets given proper charisma, charm and style. Id go for it.
End of day truth is, sex sells, guys love gorgeous characters and girls often like a more feminine touch in games (as opposed to macho male protagonists)
Princess Zelda is awesomely nice, but a prominent female heroine might add a neat cute factor that the masses can more appreciate
