Look at the examples, though. They're all reboots and retreads playing on earlier nostalgia themselves. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, original released 1986 (NES). Mario Kart 64, Super Mario Kart 1992 SNES, Mario from Donkey Kong (1981). Mortal Kombat, original 1992 arcade. Resident Evil, original 1996. Tomb Raider, original 1996 pc. Street Fighter II, original 1987 arcade. Pokemon Red and Green, origin 1996 (Game boy). Half-Life (1998 PC and PS2).

Would also quibble about the brief political mention. Debt didn't go down one iota under Clinton. Deficit went away thanks to the 1994 Omnibus budget (which Clinton opposed as too extreme - he wanted to balance the budget over 10 years vs the 104th Republican Congress plan for 7 years). Much of that savings was deferred accounting (pushed back procurement of the F-22 to the 2000's - which drastically increased the cost per plane, etc).

The world as a whole is at the brink of a 3rd World War, Ideology that doesn't fit or belong in todays world are spreading like a cancer with the goal of all people living in fear. Through my military service and the death of my high school sweetheart and first wife from brain cancer at 29, I have lived through many highs and even more lows. Videogames have always been my escape from bad times and have led to many great memories. To immerse myself into a story where I can see progress and accomplish good things and most games have an ending that wraps everything up with a nice tight bow.
Life just keeps going, there's no do overs and when someone dies you cant insert another coin to continue they're gone and all that's left is the memories. I have a wife and son that I love dearly and they make me happy and proud. Yet I do worry about the future he faces as an adult. My son and I share video gaming and we play while my wife sits and crochets looking up once in awhile to laugh at us for talking shite to one another. I have a massive collection of consoles from every part of my life. My son and I will sit downstairs in my game room and he will ask me questions about the consoles and how old I was when they came out, I tell stories of the good times, the people I knew at the time, what state I lived in when the consoles where realesed and many other things.
It amazes me the amount of my personal history that is attached to the game consoles I grew up with and the emotions Good&Bad they can trigger. In earlier times each console and game were totally new and different experiences, the current generation is pretty much playing it safe as Xbox One and PS4 are very similar in technology and game types, and to take a point from the article not only are remakes of games a safe financial bet. They harken back to a happier time when people felt more secure both in safety and financially. Hopefully the world will get back to the happiness safety and prosperity we once enjoyed, but its gonna take time and effort on everyones part. God Bless.

I think it's a touch of both. In most cases I chalk the current onslaught of remasters up to publishers not wanting to overextend the bottom line developing a new ip that may or may not succeed. But given how many are requested, frequently, by the fans- is it any wonder? Easy money is music to the shareholders.

Preying on nostalgia has been a go to strategy in almost every industry, so why the surprise that gaming has so adroitly adopted the practice?

On a more grammatical note - you used weary a couple times, but the context looked like you might have meant wary.
