Images of that child would be questionable, and may be subjected to restrictions as far as when and where it can be viewed, but it’s actually gotta be sexual in nature to be child porn.

On that note, gaming is not included, because the child in a game isn’t real. There’s no real child to exploit or otherwise harm, so that wouldn’t be an issue at all.

Age of consent varies by state, and sometimes county(parish) or city.You can look that up, too: age of consent here in Georgia is 16, not 18; it’s 14, I believe, in Alabama.

And the US is on the high side.

It might be sensible to think there were large differences between us and Japan, since we ARE half a world apart… but why does that not explain virtually every country in Europe, including ones very similar to our own?

I’m just saying, if you stop and think about it, it’s not that censorship is RIGHT, per se; rather, it just makes sense in some cases, like in the case of Xenoblade Chronicles X. I have the game and have beaten the main storyline, which forces you to have Lin in your team for most of the story. She is only 13; in other words, if there was an outfit that was just too skimpy, and if they didn’t censor it on a 13-year-old girl, you know what it would be considered, in a court of law, to be?

The removal of the bust slider might have been incorrect to censor, but its removal didn’t change much; imagine how you would feel if you were a decent person who understood that child pornography is illegal in the United States, and found out that there was a VERY close resemblance to it in Xenoblade X. I’m 90% sure you would at the very least understand that that’s dangerously close to breaking the law, with the other 10% being the opposite just because I don’t know who you really are.

Plus, you do realize that there IS that big a difference sexually between, say, the USA and Japan? Their age of consent is 13, if I recall correctly, while I believe it’s 18 in the US. Not to mention, they are on the other side of the planet; of course their culture would have many differences to ours in all areas, sexuality included.

I didn’t assign stupid to ‘not possible to understand’. It’s very easy to understand: sexuality is bad. The rest is just a veneer to rationalize how he feels about that, flimsy reasoning about how THIS sexuality or THAT sexuality specifically is bad, when in reality, he’s just a sex puritan like the rest of them, but coming from the left wing so you don’t see it coming. I find ‘sexuality is bad’ to be an extremely dumb opinion, and when all the journalists say it themselves in concert…well, it gets me angry, and I feel it needs to stop.

No offense, but you sound like said person that has a stupid opinion that isn’t shared with a vast majority. I’m not saying you’re an idiot because I don’t know you, I’m not saying you are insignificant or anything like that; I am merely pointing out the fact that you’re complaining to a guy who has a right to share an opinion (which should be available everywhere, by the way, not just where we are) over the quality of the idea being “stupid”, a concept which I usually apply to racists and other discriminatory groups. A game is made by a group of people with a certain intent and goal. Trying to localize (and by that, I mean adapting the visuals/script/etc) to better “fit” the environment the game is being sold in is blatantly tainting the intent of its original creators and is completely inexcusable. You wouldn’t expect a foreign film or story to be altered to better fit the environment it is being broadcast or read in, would you? It ruins the medium.

Yes, at the end of the day this is a business and game creators are just trying to make money. But I don’t think the result is worth the cost.

That’s very true but it involves different costs. End of the day: still pricey to get it to us since the last game sold so terribly worldwide.

What I will say is that the author of this article exhibits a huge amount of hubris to call his position “common sense” and imply that people who dislike this pattern of censorship to not possess common sense. The author himself says that it’s a non-obvious, messy issue, when he’s trying to dismantle the intuition of his opponents. But suddenly the issue is obvious “common sense” when promoting his opinion.

All in all this is just another garbage journalist who has no sense of journalistic ethics.

See, you usually convince someone by appealing to their goals; for example, I would appeal to someone interested in social justice by pointing out that they are hurting social justice.

But you’re just an SJW; you don’t actually care about social justice, just about feeling good about yourself.
