Okay here's my retail stories.... I worked at Toys R Us until shortly after the 360 launched. We had quotas as well, for batteries, game and console warranties, membership sign ups and a few other things I can't remember any longer. However, nobody ever felt like their job was in jeopardy for not meeting them, and I never saw anybody get fired for missing...

I worked the customer service counter so I had more trouble meeting the quotas but they understood that.

Also once or twice a year, toys r us has a buy 2 videogames get another free. We had a lady come in and try to return one game she paid for, making it so she bought one and got one free. I told her she couldn't do this because it was a bundle, she flipped shit and made me call the manager. Manager came and let her do it and gave her a $5 gift card or something. Later that week we got a memo from corporate saying we had to let them return it, leaving it B1G1. So I said fuck it, went and did the same thing, returned the game myself. My manager looked at me and was like, you shouldn't do that, it hurts the company. I looked at her and said, you shouldn't let people do that if it hurts the company. I've done that pretty much every year since and you can still do it to this day regardless of which toys r us store.
