To me, it’s become very obvious that this game has not aged very well at all, and has very few remaining virtues when you just look at it as a game and analyze its mechanics and systems and design.

I feel like just about everyone that says Mario 64 is “The Best” has nostalgic rose-tinted glasses on. The list of complaints and criticisms that I can come up with when compared to newer games is sooo long. I genuinely think it’s the worst Mario game out of all of them… past and future… when “nostalgia” and “significance” is taken out of the equation:

The whole point of the first Yoshi’s Island game is that Mario, who got picked up by the Yoshi’s, goes all the way to Bowser’s Castle (with the help of said Yoshis) to defeat Baby Bowser and rescue Luigi

that’s right, chronologically, before Daisy, Pauline, and Peach, Luigi was the first character Mario rescued.
