So they (MS) want one unified OS across future platforms/devices where the “interface” potentially remains constant but the hardware is upgraded annually like a phone? Or is this just moving to upgradable modular hardware? Or do I not just get it?

From what Phil Spencer said, newer games would work on older hardware. I’m guessing (just like on PC) they will run on lower settings.

The major question is will the new games be playable on the older hardware just at lower specs.
