They absolutely could afford to, as a company. I don’t know what leeway Phil has with the budget, and I don’t know what kind of pull the gaming division currently has, and I’m not defending the decision at all! Maybe Phil could have made it happen, but didn’t want to because he’s all about those deadlines, maybe his hands were tied, I don’t know. But you didn’t really answer the question either! Given the choice of one or the other, what do you pick?

We’re not talking about a small indie company that has to be careful with its budget. This is Microsoft. Sony kept The Last Guardian going for 10 years. Square-Enix kept FFvXIII/FFXV going for 10 years. Nioh was in development for 10 years. MS has more money than all of these companies combined. You telling me they couldn’t give the gaming division to keep Scalebound alive? I don’t buy it. MS just has no faith in its games unless they are Halo, Forza, or Gears.

Yeah, to be clear, I don’t want it to go to Sony and be exclusive. I’d rather it go to another publisher to finish, even if part of the agreement was for it to still be MS exclusive.

,Vgcharts is not reliable and in any case Sony wound up dropping the I886 developer and the game is hardly ever mentioned by Sony. Also the price at which games sell matter a lot for example driveclub sold over 2million but probably a large number of that was sold at around 20 dollars which greatly reduces the profit margin and Sony closed the studio as it was not sustainable for them.
Also if you’re talking new ips then” The last of Us” cannot be considered since it came out last gen, only blood borne is actually viable on that list the rest have yet to be seen as they haven’t release.
Unfortunately new ips are better suited as multiplats in my opinion.

I was talking about new IP which Infamous: Second Son is not. I don’t know what you’re basing those games not doing well on but the only numbers I could find are fron VGChartz and it has The Order: 1886 at 1.74 million and Infamous: Second Son at 2.79 million. Those numbers aren’t exact but they are close and that seems like they sold well to me.

I agree that MS tried to bring in new IP but their fans just didn’t support them.

As far as the game in development hell it depends on how much money is already lost and how anticipated the game was. No game has been in development hell like The Last Guardian and if financially broke Sony still released it why couldn’t MS at least release Fable?

I think they should have suspended it for Scorpio as the developers simply could not get it to work and were way behind their contractual schedule. Putting it out as it was would have been a disaster, if people were ripping Recore they would have bombed Scalebound.

Legit question (no troll): We all know Microsoft has deep pockets, but their gaming division doesn’t seem to have as much capital as the previous generation, and operate on a stricter budget. If you have to decide between a game that is apparently in development hell (even though highly anticipated), and a new promising project, what do you do? Why?

Likely Crackdown 3, Forza. Not sure when State of Decay 2 comes out.

Honestly, it’s not a terrible lineup without Scalebound. With that said, Scalebound still a huge loss. If it was just SB, it wouldn’t be as bad but with Lionhead closing and Fable Legends never releasing, Spark being shut down, Phantom Dust remake being canceled and turned into a remaster, makes you lose faith in their plans / future releases. MS could have taken notes from Sony here…. As shitty as Sony is about managing their game releases, they manage to turn it into hype instead (TLG), and probably what MS should have done, without knowing obviously what fully happened.

Unfortunately, I don’t see many risks being taken by them in the future, and likely more formulaic games. Despite all the shit MS gets, they did TRY to bring in new franchises that didn’t turn out that way, whether it was due to consumer support or product quality doesn’t really matter. It’s a shame if this forces them to go back more towards their known commodities.

Then what do they have for their all important holiday line up?
