I would say their greatest strength in narratives isn't so much the history as crafting an assassin that resonates with both the era and players. Because where any game completely loses me is in the assassin (or assassins) it chooses to focus on. Altair wasn't enough to make the Crusades tempting (despite a lifetime addiction to stories of that era). Ezio though? Everyone's darling. Connor and Arno both made barriers with gruff sourpuss demeanors where Edward and Aveline charmed. Jacob was a daft tryhard who dragged Syndicate down, where Evie could have held it up far better (though the failure in making a game about Assassin twins a solo effort and not co-op was even greater). I have yet to play Origins or Rogue, but I already know that regardless of the history it will be the assassin (or Templar) who keeps my interest.

Thanks for this great comment. I agree, the modern plot could work if they put more effort into it. But that isn't happening so at this point they may as well stick to their biggest strength (history).

I think the AC game play could lend itself to a more modern plot incredibly well if they would just double the hell down on it instead of pussyfooting around trying to cut back and forth. At least with Desmond there was a direction they were moving, the biggest sin coming out of AC III was no present day/near future payoff. Just more dicking around with Abstergo. The modern day cut with Black Flag actually worked out much better than I anticipated at the end with that sudden holy shit moment (trying to avoid spoilers because it really is one of the better gotchas in digital story telling), but again a more developed experience could have tied it all off beautifully.

I'm all for more history, especially when they stay far enough back that they can hide in the realm of plausibilities- again, AC III screwed up by messing with one of the most scrupulously documented periods of American history. All through the game I could hear my college history professor groaning every time they tried to work in some big historical event. Connor should have been moving through these events behind the scenes, not out front. More Last of the Mohicans, less The Patriot.

I would still love more history, China during the Boxer Rebellion, Japan when Roosevelt's White Fleet arrived, Morocco during the Perdicaris incident, there's so much out there......

Still though, a modern AC in the vein of Dan Brown or even a swerve into something like Robert Ludlum's comedic work (The Road to Gandolfo / The Road to Omaha) is a tantalizing possibility.
