Microsoft has today confirmed that former Sony and Atari executive Phil Harrison has replaced Peter Molyneux as head of Microsoft Studios Europe. Phil will lead the European studios and be in full control over bringing culturally relevant entertainment experience to Microsoft’s platforms.
Phil Harrison had this to say about his new appointment:
“I am excited to be joining the senior team at Microsoft at a pivotal time for our industry. I am really impressed with the company’s long-term vision for growing the market for interactive entertainment globally and also with the incredible wealth of talent, technology and resources the company has available to succeed.”
Phil Spencer, corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios also issued a statement:
“Phil is one of video gaming’s true visionaries, and his experience overseeing global studios and deep industry relationships make him the ideal person to lead our European efforts. Under his leadership, we look forward to continuing cultivating the best talent and growing our business in the region.
The news is likely to stir up quite a brew among fanboy gamers as Phil Harrison was one of Sony Europe’s most honorable executives, and now many Sony loyalists will feel like he’s aiding “the enemy”. If you manage to put your personal preferences aside and look at from a business standpoint however you’ll see that this makes perfect sense. Who better to replace a legend like Peter Molyneux? Those are extremely big shoes to fill.
