SiN: Reloaded Is Shaping Up To Be Another Great Remaster By Nightdive Studios

Last week, Nightdive Studios surprised fans with a long-awaited announcement that SiN: Reloaded is finally coming to consoles and PC later this year. Based on the 1998 cult-classic first-person shooter SiN, Reloaded is a remaster with enhanced visuals, modern controls, and the inclusion of the Wages of SiN extra mission pack.

Shortly after this announcement, I got to spend hands-on time with SiN: Reloaded at my Atari appointment, and enjoyed every minute of my session. Here are a few more thoughts on what this game is and why it’s already shaping up to be another great remaster by Nightdive Studios.

SiN takes place in a dystopian future in which a biotechnology megacorporation, SinTEK Industries, injects an army with a DNA-altering drug and plans to take over the world. Players step into the role of Colonel John R. Blade and are tasked with eliminating any and every threat that SinTEK throws their way. This game was originally built using a modified version of the Quake II engine, and the cool, wisecracking protagonist is reminiscent of other badass characters we have seen in action games.

Nightdive Studios acquired the rights to SiN back in 2020 and re-released it before announcing they were working on a remaster. Six years later, we finally have SiN: Reloaded, which feels like a faithful remaster designed for a new generation of players. I hadn’t heard of this game until spending hands-on time with it, and I’m certainly glad I know about it now.

My demo session consisted of playing through the first two levels of the game. The enhanced visuals looked spectacular, with more detailed weapons, character models, and various stage sections. The level designer was also present during my session, and I learned he is a fan of the original game. His design work directly led to him getting this opportunity to work on this remaster. Nightdive Studios pays close attention to their community, and hiring fans and talented modders in this space is exactly why they are at the top of their game when making remasters.

In addition to the crisp visuals, the modernized gameplay controls felt very satisfying and easy enough for anyone to jump right in. The guns were responsive, and hacking into computer terminals made me even more curious to dive deeper into this world. The game can also be challenging, as I died more than a few times during intense shootouts and while trying to escape certain areas within a small window of time. Overall, the game is a lot of fun, and I look forward to playing even more when it drops later this year.
