Today, Microsoft confirmed via their blog that Sleeping Dogs, and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will both be available for free during the January “Games With Gold” promotion.
The promo kicks off with Sleeping Dogs which will be available for download to all Xbox Live Gold subscribers from January 1st to January 15th. This popular open world action-adventure title was originally titled True Crime: Hong Kong and eventually went on to become a sleeper hit when it launched on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC way back in August of 2012. I also listed it as one of the best games of 2012 when we started putting together our individual gaming lists for that year. If for any reason you still haven’t had a chance to play this game, then I would urge you to do so as soon as it becomes free on January 1st.
On January 16th, the promo will continue with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light taking over as the free game for the rest of the month. This action platformer carries a much more arcade-inspired vibe and can be play cooperatively with a friend. The timing of this particular offering serves as the perfect reminder that the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be launching on both the Xbox One and PS4 later that month.
After today’s news about both of these titles becoming a part of the games with gold promo, I would have to say that Microsoft is now making the effort to improve this service for the better. While it still isn’t half as good as what PS Plus continues to offer customers on a regular basis, I’m personally glad to see that they are capable of making improvements where they are necessary. It will be very interesting to see exactly what type of titles will be offered when games with gold comes to the Xbox One in 2014.
