“The desire to become a superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals. Anyone with that serum is inherently on that path,” Baron Zemo ((Daniel Bruhl) reiterates to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in the fourth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, “The Whole World is Watching,” directed by Kari Skogland and written by Derek Kolstad.
Just because Steve Rogers managed to follow the path of heroism doesn’t need others will follow when given power. But what drives someone to be a super-soldier and a supremacist? How did Steve Rogers manage to uphold the concept of Captain America when all other heroes, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell struggle with what Captain America means? Does one even need to exist? Is there such a thing as “good people”? Men can change, but how they decide to change is what separates a “hero” from a “villain.”
A killer soldier takes on a new meaning when John Walker’s Captain America is pushed to the edge, disgracing the meaning of the shield and the legacy of Steve Rogers by doing the unthinkable. Meanwhile Sam Wilson and Karli bond over the importance of Black representation and the need for superheroes of color.
As Bucky Barnes gets disassembled like a toaster oven when him and Ayo come to a disagreement, Zemo sends a subtle message through Turkish Delights (Chronicles of Narnia, anyone?), Sharon brokerages her power (hint hint).
