Ouya Consoles To Release Annually

The Ouya console is to be released annually in comparison to the mobile strategy rather than the longer term console cycle, CEO Julie Uhrman told Engadget.

“There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3,” said Uhrman. “We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will.”

The current plan is for all future Ouya’s to be backwards compatible, allowing users to play their previous games on the newer, updated models. “The games will be tied to you, the gamer,” said Uhrman, this is similar to the way digital stores such as Steam and Origin work.

The first version of the Ouya will make its way to Kickstarter backers this March, and it will be hitting the stores this June. It comes with a quad-core A9 Tegra 3 that’s been maxed out to 1.6GHz and is a completely open platform allowing users to experiment with it in any way they wish.
