Kickstarter Weekly: Project Nimbus and Leroy Johnson in the Greatest Game Ever Made

The Sky is the Limit for These Two Games by on January 2, 2014   Twitter   Google+

Welcome back to the fifth Kickstarter Weekly. This article marks the first Kickstarter Weekly of 2014, and what better way to celebrate the new year than with a list of games about New Years Eve? Why, the better way is to scratch that idea and talk about games that take place in space. After all, it is the new year, which means everyone has a fresh start, and the sky is the limit–oh yeah!

Project Nimbus

Project by: KISS Ltd.

Goal: $6,000

Current Funds: $4,297

End: January 25, 2014

If your resolution for 2014 is to terrorize your neighbors with a giant, weaponized mech suit, then you’ve probably failed because you lack the ingenuity—feel free to prove me wrong.  Luckily, mech suit games will always be around, and KISS Ltd.’s Project Nimbus is well underway; it just needs a bit more of a push via crowdsourcing.

Project Nimbus has my attention because it looks to be a fast-paced, visceral experience. The game promises “total flying freedom” and it even allows players to fly from the planet’s surface to orbit. The only things hindering your total freedom are colossal weapons and ace pilots, so you’ll need to shoot them down.

In addition, the game will have a story told from different perspectives and factions. There will be full voice acting as well. While it’s nice that they’re placing emphasis on the story, I’ll be happy just to fly anywhere I’d like, shooting down anything in my way to the freaking moon.

KISS Ltd. will use the funds to help the game see the light of day. They’ve already made significant progress; they just need to push it to (digital) store shelves. That said, they’ll use the funds to create additional game modes including the promising Sandbox Mode.  So check out Project Nimbus’s Kickstarter if you’re interested.

Leroy Johnson in the Greatest Game Ever Made

Project by: SpriteSoHard Studios

Goal: $8,500

Current Funds: $1,943

End: January 17, 2014

Well, it’s the greatest game ever made. SpriteSoHard Studios’s moms have confirmed it, so it obviously deserves to be funded. Case closed. But actually, this game does sound amazing. What looks like a stylish 2D platformer is actually an RPG with some unique, scientific twists.

Leeroy Johnson in the Greatest Game Ever Made is a sci-fi game with Blaxploitation influence, so what better way to advertise the game by making a video narrated in a similar style! Leeroy is a renowned, smooth-talking astrophysicist who warns NASA that aliens are dimensional beings from parallel planet Earths. NASA mocks him until the aliens invade, and Leeroy Johnson is the only one capable of saving the world.

Leeroy Johnson is in a science-based game, which means weapons won’t be standard—except maybe the lead pipe shown in an image in the Kickstarter. Instead, Leroy will use devices that he has developed such as the Red Ruby. SpriteSoHard Studios designed the game around STEM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), although they promise that it’s NOT an educational game. That said, Leroy will be exposed to the pathogens surrounding each dimension, and he’ll need to use his devices to learn about his environment to solve puzzles.

SpriteSoHard Studios has a unique approach for a sidescrolling RPG, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. Even if you’re not sold on the STEM concepts, it looks to be an engrossing game that plays like a mixture of Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda. It could literally be the greatest game ever made.
