The Best Games of 2014: May Releases

With E3 2014 now only a month away, May is already shaping up to be another strong month for video game releases. While Watch_Dogs and Mario Kart 8 will no doubt be the biggest titles out this month, Transistor and Wolfenstein: The New Order are also destined to be both memorable and exciting in their own unique ways. Below is a short list of 12 great games to keep your eyes on as the weeks go by.

Mario Golf: World Tour is the 6th entry in the popular Mario Golf series of video games. This title features several playable Mario franchise characters and numerous online multiplayer golf tournaments. If you’re looking for a fun golf game to play with your friends, then this game was made just for you.

Full Title: Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Developers: HAL Laboratory

Release Date: May 2nd (North America) May 16th (Europe)

Kirby: Triple Double is an engaging platformer that is displayed in a 2.5D perspective. The game makes full use of the same engine as Kirby’s Return to Dream Land and allows players to move between both the foreground and background in every stage. If you’re a diehard fan of Kirby, then you may want to check this out on May 2nd.

MLB 14: The Show is finally coming to the PlayStation 4 early next week. While I already mentioned this game on my April releases list, the fact of the matter is that the PS4 version has a few noticeable changes that makes it standout from the PS3 build. I would encourage you all to check out the video embedded above to see exactly what I mean.

Release Date: May 9th (North America and Europe)

Bound By Flame is currently being touted as one of the first major action RPGs to release on next-gen consoles. The game is expected to deal with the central themes of conflict and war throughout. If you’re a fan of action rpgs, then you may want to do yourself a favor and pick this up on May 9th.

Soul Sacrifice Delta is the full fledged sequel to the original Soul Sacrifice. This sequel includes new bosses, a new faction, co-op attacks, and more. If you enjoyed the first game in the series, then you’ll absolutely love what this one has to offer too.

Drakengard 3 is a prequel to the original Drakengard. This action RPG wowed Japanese critics when it launched late last December. Now that it’s officially headed west, we will finally get to see if the game is truly worth all of the praise that it’s getting.

The third episode in Telltale’s critically acclaimed Walking Dead series is almost here. After all of the events that transpired in A House DividedIn Harm’s Way is sure the raise the bar even higher. If you’re a fan of the series, then picking this up on day one is an absolute no-brainer.

Transistor is a beautifully designed science fiction action RPG created by Supergiant Games. The player takes on the role of a young female singer named Red who acquires a mysterious intelligent sword and must protect it from getting into the wrong hands. I played this game during PAX East and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. If you’re a fan of Bastion, then you might want to check this out too.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is the 9th installment in the Wolfenstein series and easily the best FPS title out this month. I wrote an extensive hands-on preview of the game after having played through the first three levels in their entirety. Simply put, this is one game that I would highly recommend if you love shooters.

Release Date: May 23rd (North America and Europe)

Tropico 5 is a construction and management simulation fixated on city building. This particular title in the series adds both cooperative and competitive multiplayer to keep things fresh and engaging. If you love games like Sim City, then you may want to keep this game on your radar.

After a widely publicized delay last October, Watch_Dogs is finally hitting retailers everyone later this month. As Aiden Pierce, players will be able to hack into the Chicago underworld scene and systematically take down the criminals responsible for disrupting his life. This will easily be one of the most talked about games out this month. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss out on this one.

Release Date: May 30th (North America and Europe)

Mario Kart 8 is the highly anticipated next entry in the popular Mario Kart racing series. Wii U owners have been patiently waiting for both this game and Super Smash Bros. Now that the game is only a few weeks away, Wii U owners can rest easy knowing that they will finally be able to make use of their console again.
