Publisher Dotemu and Developer Tribute Games announced Marvel Cosmic Invasion at a Nintendo Direct earlier this year. After the overwhelming success of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, it seemed inevitable that this dynamic duo would work together again on some exciting projects.
During Summer Game Fest Play Days, I spent 30 minutes of hands-on time with this title and walked away impressed. Here are my thoughts on what you can expect when the game is released later this year.

Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes Unite
Marvel Cosmic Invasion is a 2D retro-stylized beat ’em up featuring 15 playable heroes teaming up to defeat Annihilus as he unleashes an Annihilation Wave across the galaxy. Players can pick and swap between two heroes at a time as they travel from New York City to the inner depths of the Negative Zone. This tag-team feature is smart because it lets you try out two heroes with varying combat styles and special attacks.
The currently announced roster of heroes includes:
- Captain America
- Spider-Man
- Wolverine
- Storm
- Venom
- Nova
- Phyla-Vell
- She-Hulk
- Rocket Raccoon
There’s no official word on when the remaining six heroes will be announced, but I suppose these fun rollouts will happen throughout the summer and into the Fall, closer to the game’s release date. We can also expect to learn more about which supervillain bosses will be in the game, as Thanos is teased in the screenshot below.

The demo featured the two levels I included in the alpha gameplay footage displayed in the video above. I paired Spider-Man with Wolverine as my starting duo. When I started playing, the controls felt very satisfying and familiar. It was easy to swap between characters, and I liked how attacks carried over from one superhero to the next. The stage concluded with a boss fight against Beetle.
On the second stage, I tried out Atom and Storm, which proved to be a powerful team. I played the entire demo solo, but watched others around me play in teams. I didn’t get to finish the second stage since I ran out of time. Marvel Cosmic Invasion will have local and online play options when it drops, so friends and family can join in the fun.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion sounds and looks great. The sound effects from special attacks and the musical soundtrack set the tone for what an action-packed Marvel game should be.
The character models are callbacks to similar designs from previous Marvel games. This means the experience has a hint of nostalgia, but still feels like fresh content for new and veteran fans.

Verdict So Far
Marvel Cosmic Invasion looks phenomenal and poised to be another big hit for Tribute Games and Dotemu. Stay tuned for more details and additional gameplay content in the months ahead.
