Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster Is A SAVAGE Stealth Action Platformer (Preview)

Dotemu has been very busy this year working with their partners on several upcoming video games you may or may not have heard of. While I plan to talk more about these titles soon, today I want to focus on one game tied to a wildly popular franchise many love.

Enter Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster, an upcoming single-player action platformer starring the Skaven Ratmen. Developed by Old Skull Games and published by Dotemu, this title was announced at May’s Warhammer Skulls event and is coming to consoles and PC next year. Recently, I tried out a brief preview build of the game. Here are my thoughts on what to expect if this title is on your radar.

Deathmaster tells the story of Vihneek, a hooded Ratman who is saved by the Eshin clan in return for his steadfast loyalty to their cause. Portrayed as a dark and aggressive killer, Vihneek must use stealth, traps, and several weapons to slaughter every Skaven that gets in his way. As a fan of both Warhammer and Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was instantly intrigued by this title and look forward to seeing the journey this story takes us on.

The demo featured a few levels to showcase pieces of Vihneek’s story. The first level features our protagonist trying to escape a prison facility he was placed in. The gameplay session focused on using stealth in every scenario, including crawling on walls and ceilings above enemies and avoiding detection near fire and light sources. You can also throw items to distract enemies away from your exact location. Despite these things, tension remains high as you navigate from one dark corridor and rat hole to the next, suffering immediate death by beating if spotted. This level concluded with Vihneek being chased by a massive boss enemy and being saved by the Eshin clan leader.

After being made a clan member, the rest of the demo highlights Vihneek doing task-based clan objectives while exploring the sinister, hopeless world around him. You gain access to more tools like the grappling hook, which helps with traversal. You also access an Abilities section, where you’ll gain more abilities as you progress through the game. There was a lot to unlock here, but most of these options weren’t available for the demo.

Overall, this short demo did a great job of showing how atmospheric this world is. The grittiness of the locations, coupled with the brutal action when you are attacked, really proves that the developers at Old Skull Games have done their homework on matching the vibe this franchise is known for. Stay tuned for more of our coverage on this game and other upcoming Dotemu-published titles as we learn and play more.
