The Koalition Hip Hop Awards 2014 started off incredibly strong, taking a look at the dopest collaborations of last year. Today, we take a look at individual performances that left impressions on us.
Joe Hova
Big K.R.I.T. – “Mt. Olympus”
K.R.I.T. SNAPPED on this one. “Now they wanna hear a country n***a rap” was all it took for me to nominate this as the Song of the Year. Not to mention the hard pounding bass that rattles your trunk when playing this in the car.

Rapsody – “Hard To Choose”
Before this year, I was perpetually on the fence when it came to Rapsody. She was gifted, no doubt, and I’ve been a 9th Wonder fan forever but I never was drawn into one of her songs so much that I invested time into a legit listening of a project. It took the most random encounter with a couple of my closest friends and fraternity brothers where one of us sat us in the car to give “Hard To Choose” a listen. I was blown away line after line. From the gate, a painful honesty was evident in the rhymes and I always gravitate toward that type of music. Glad I was forced to listen too, this song is featured on one of the top Hip Hop projects of the entire year. Don’t sleep.

Kendrick Lamar – “i”
2014 proved to be a great year for hip-hop music in pretty much every way imaginable. While I enjoyed J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive and some tracks off of Common’s Nobody’s Smiling album, the one song that I enjoyed most came from Kendrick Lamar. Both “i” and his performance of “Untitled” during the Colbert show are very promising signs of what will be a phenomenal sophomore album effort from him. While I’m a little disappointed that this album didn’t drop in 2014, I still remain intrigued by the greatness he will ultimately deliver to Hip Hop in 2015.
