It’s finally officially: The Batman is getting a sequel and yes, Robert Pattinson will return as Gotham’s newest protector.
Warner Bros. revealed its plans for another Batman story during its Tuesday evening presentation at CinemaCon, the annual trade show for theater owners. The Batman director Matt Reeves was personally there to announce not just the sequel, but he will write and direct the follow-up. While no other details were announced, provide any details about what the movie will entail, fans have already theorized Freeze could be the next villain. Pattinson has even stated he wanted to face The Court of Owls.
The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, and Reeves himself, who joined Emmerich onstage during his opening remarks at the Warner Bros. Pictures presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
HBO Max recently announced a series centered around Colin Farrell as The Penguin, derived directly from the universe launched by The Batman.
Reeves is currently reteaming with J.J. Abrams and DC universe veteran Bruce Timm on the streamer’s upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. The filmmaker’s prior films include the hugely successful Planet of the Apes franchise, the acclaimed fantasy horror film Let Me In, and the sci-fi horror hit Cloverfield, among others. Reeves’ additional credits include the popular TV series Felicity, which he co-created with Abrams, as well as the series Ordinary Joe, Lift, Mother/Android, Away, Tales from the Loop and The Passage, among others.
The Batman, a gritty three-hour superhero adventure, debuted on the big screen in March, kicking off with $134 million domestically. Those ticket sales still rank as the biggest opening weekend of 2022, as well as only the second pandemic-era movie to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend following Spider-Man: No Way Home with $759 million to date at the global box office. The Batman is currently the highest grossing movie of the year.
