NBC’s The Endgame is a fast-paced female-centric drama led by the talented Morena Baccarina as a mysterious femme fatale who can bring the country to its knees. Innovative and stylish, fans have gravitated to each thrilling moment that’s both fun and smartly written.
This high-stakes drama centers around Elena Federova, a recently captured international arms dealer and genius criminal mastermind who orchestrated numerous coordinated bank heists throughout New York City for a mysterious yet personal purpose. However, the woman standing in her way is Val Turner, equally unmatched and determined to bring her down. Just like Elena, she is relentless. Considered a rebellious FBI agent who will stop at nothing to unravel Elena’s complicated plan, The Endgame questions how far some people will go for love, finding justice and making their voices heard.
As secrets unfold and enemies lurk in every corner, The Endgame proved no one can be trusted not even the President of the United States, who could be the show’s biggest villain. As the future of American democracy hangs in the very balance, the final episode of the season, titled “Happily Ever After,” is around the corner. How do you stop the President of the United States, a criminal with unchecked power, who also has nothing to lose and is considered untouchable?
This is also a personal mission for Val as Owen Turner (Kamal Bolden) as Val’s husband and a former FBI agent was sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement with a drug cartel may be connected to Elena’s bigger picture, even though he’s still behind bar. Throughout the season his actions bring more questions than answers and what started off as a prison sentence is looking more suspect the further down the rabbit hole you go.
The Koalition spoke to Kamal Bolden about his role in the series, whether there’s more to Kamal’s story and if he can be trusted.
“Owen has been questioning that throughout this whole series from the jump when he decided to present Val with those divorce papers; there’s been this question of, ‘Can I survive?’ I have put myself in a position to do that it just makes for a good drama. Sergey and [Owen] are doing a two-man job but as we see when Sergey asks Owen, ‘when we get out of this we’re going to go back to normal, we’re going to live it up.’ Owen is the one that’s very ambivalent but also conflicted. ‘No man, you get to go back to this great life. I don’t know how Val is going to receive this, I don’t know how my life is going to be after this. We see Owen sweating a little bit towards the end of this the first season.’
“Owen is one of the best FBI agents, Val and Owen are one of those rare combinations of husband and wives like a Mr. and Mrs. Smith [and] Owen definitely is thinking three or four or five steps ahead. He totally has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.”
The Endgame manages to separate itself from similar shows with its storytelling, as it plays with the concept of using fairytales as an allegory, from the name Snow White for Elena’s organization to her crowning herself Queen to the title of “Happy Ever after.” As the criminal mastermind, she tells stories of her past that includes princesses and both evil and good kings. No matter the how the story concludes, each character is searching for their happily ever after. If Elena does wrong in search of getting is happily ever after, what is Owen willing to do for his?
“Owen’s happily ever after would be getting out number one, getting safely out of prison, from there the world is his oyster. Two, is getting back with Val [because] when you talk about a marriage and not only a marriage but a friendship that long, you would hope there’s enough of a foundation there you can reconcile things, but it takes two to tango. I think Owen’s happily ever after [is] Val finds an understanding and forgives him for the divorce papers, forgives him for not letting her in on all of the things that have been going on this past year while he’s been in prison, and forgives him for even being in prison in the first place.”
