Why Invincible VS Is This Year’s Must-Play Fighting Game

Invincible VS is a game I’ve been excited about since it was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase last June. As a fan of the Invincible Amazon Prime animated series, the 2023 Invincible Presents: Atom Eve video game, and the entire fighting game genre, I was immediately sold on this concept and hopeful that a certain intergalactic warrior could finally find a worthy opponent.

After attending two Xbox hands-on preview events and participating in an alpha last Fall, I’m pleased to say that Invincible VS is even better than I originally imagined. It’s not just the perfect complement to the comic and animated series, but it’s also my most anticipated fighting game of this year. Here are more details on the game, my overall thoughts on what I’ve played so far, and why this brutal fighting game is currently at the top of my must-have list.

Invincible VS is a gloriously savage superhero 3v3 tag fighting game currently being developed by Quarter Up and published by Skybound Games. The game includes the voice cast from the Amazon animated series, a story mode, training mode, rollback netcode support for online multiplayer matches, and 18 playable fighters at launch, with four additional DLC characters planned for the future.

During the first Xbox hands-on event, I played several matches against Game Director Dave Hall. That demo build included Invincible, Omni-Man, Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Bulletproof, Thula, and Battle Beast.

This was my first formal introduction to the game, and everything about it seemed on point. The beautifully designed character models, action-packed animation sequences, and character interactions felt authentic to the Invincible universe, pulling me deeper into the chaos. Switching between fighters and using combined abilities and attacks felt incredibly good, whether in victory or defeat.

The alpha I played during the Fall had the same roster with the addition of Cecil, Robot & Monster Girl. Cecil was, without a doubt, a very popular choice among those I played against, as he is an absolute beast with his gun. Adding these characters was important as it showed the growing range of fighting types in the game to keep the overall experience balanced.

When it came to fighting other players online, I found opponents pretty quickly and didn’t have any connection issues during my matches. Aside from the practice and online matches options, there wasn’t anything else available to try out during the alpha. I could see the story mode option and get a feel for the overall main menu layout, but that was about it.

The most recent build I played at an Xbox GDC event included Anissa, Lucan, Ella Mental, Powerplex, and Dupli-Kate. After playing several matches with Executive Producer Mike Willette and hearing more details about the combat improvements being made from player feedback, I walked away with 3 specific reasons why I can’t wait to spend even more time with this game.

First and foremost, Quarter Up has quickly proven to me that they are the perfect studio to make this game. Having worked on Killer Instinct, this team of veterans and rising stars understands what it takes to make a good fighting game. They’re also receiving feedback from prominent figures in the FCG community, such as Maximillion Dood, which highlights their level of commitment to getting everything right.

Secondly, I personally love the 3v3 tag concept for a game like this. Much like MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, part of the fun comes from mixing and matching fighters together to come up with an unstoppable team. Making these discoveries could go a long way in keeping battles even more unpredictable and engaging.

Lastly and most interesting of all, Quarter Up has an endless number of characters to choose from to complete the roster. We got a big surprise at The Game Awards in December with the introduction of a new character named Ella Mental, who was created specifically for this game. Voiced by Rapper Tierra Whack, I’ll be curious to see if Ella Mental also appears in this new season of Invincible. It was also cool to see Allen the Alien added to the roster last week.

Quarter Up has stated their game will only include characters who have appeared in the animated series, which definitely leaves the door open for Oliver, Conquest, and several others to join the fray. We can expect more exciting roster reveals in the weeks ahead.

With all that said, I’m definitely looking forward to Invincible VS, and convinced that Battle Beast just might have finally met his match.

Stay tuned for more coverage on this gamewhich has an open beta planned for April 9th before launching on April 30th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Are you planning on checking out Invincible VS? Let us know in the comments section below.
