The stakes of the 2026 midterm elections

More than a single-night broadcast, “The People’s Election Night” represents a shared commitment to expanding access to trusted information, strengthening voter participation and helping audiences remain engaged in the electoral process across local, state and federal election cycles. On November 3, American voters will determine the composition of the 120th Congress, with all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats on the ballot. Thirty-three Senate seats are subject to regularly scheduled elections, with special elections also taking place in Florida and Ohio. Voters in 36 states will elect governors, while communities nationwide will decide state legislative races, local offices and ballot measures.

Expanding voter participation and strengthening the people’s voice

The broadcast comes amid growing attention to voter engagement, political representation and the need to develop sustained relationships with communities that have historically faced barriers to participation. In May 2026, TheGrio reported findings from a Black Men Vote survey conducted by HIT Strategies involving more than 1,600 Black men ages 18 to 45. The survey found that 26 percent of respondents in six states — Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina — were uncertain or unlikely to participate in the midterm elections, even as 92 percent recognized the importance of voting. The findings highlighted the distinction between recognizing the importance of voting and consistently participating in Elections. They also underscored the value of sustained civic education, accessible election information and meaningful engagement between election cycles.

With early voting already underway in many states, the participating organizations are emphasizing the importance of understanding voting options, confirming registration information and making a plan to participate in the election. Eligible voters are encouraged to review the candidates and measures on their ballots and determine when and where they can cast their votes. Early voting opportunities, absentee ballot requirements and deadlines vary by state. Official election information is available through Vote.gov and state and local election offices.

Building a lasting commitment to civic participation

“The People’s Election Night” is built on a simple principle. The people’s voice matters before the polls open, after the ballots are counted and in every decision that follows. For the participating media organizations, the 2026 midterm elections represent an opportunity to advance a longer-term commitment to civic participation that extends beyond Election Day.

Throughout the evening, “The People’s Election Night” will combine live results, political reporting, on-the-ground perspectives and cultural commentary to help audiences understand the outcomes, the policy issues involved and what the election results could mean for communities across the country. Through trusted voices, accessible news coverage and meaningful conversations about public policy, the conversation will aim to strengthen voter education, turnout and sustained participation across election cycles.
