Crysis 2 Demo Finally Hits PCs Today… With Some Caveats [Updated]

EA/Crytek put out a multiplayer demo for Crysis 2, one of the most highly anticipated shooters this year. Unfortunately for PC gamers (like myself), there are a lot of unfortunate decisions that end up hindering the PC version of this game, making it far more “consolized” than it should be.

The most offensive option that’s on by default is auto-aim, something that is unheard of when playing a PC shooter online. There is very little in the way of customization either, and even simple things like toggling to aim is nowhere to be found. Also, confusingly absent is the ability to tweak any of the graphics options, instead only allowing gamers to choose from a few pre-sets.

This wouldn’t be such an issue if there was at least some semblance of customization, and things like temporal anti-aliasing are forced. But the lack of tweaking isn’t the only major issue, as Crytek has opted to use Gamespy’s matchmaking system in order to run their multi-player, which as many PC gamers know has not worked well in the past few games that featured it, such as Borderlands.

Lastly, take a good look at the header image for this post. The words “Press start to begin” don’t mean anything when you don’t have a controller plugged in.

Update: It also seems as though the PC version will not be shipping with DirectX 11 support according to a forum post linking to a Swedish PC site. This isn’t a surprise since the demo, which is for a game only weeks away, also does not include DirectX 11 support either.
